My personal favorite is Lewis Black. I wouldn't rate him as best of all time but I damn good. I have to agree with Cail - Richard Pryor is the best of all time.

I've never seen Lewis Black before but I heard the local radio station interview him and he was great. I love Connelly too, but not for the sitcom he did in the US (loved him as Wallace's nuncle too!).

Early Cosby is fantastic, "I had gone to great lenghts to prove to Jr. Barnes that I was his closet of friends, even let him drink out of my Orange Crush bottle, without wiping it off..."

"Buck Buck number one, coming down!"

And yeah, Lewis Black is pretty funny.

Oh MAN!
I love the Chicken Heart.
I play it for my kids diring Halloween.
They have no idea what half of it means but they love it.
(like the radio having so many dials but only two work is lost on them)
And I swear to God, someday soon I'm going to use the "invisible snakes under the bed" line on my kids too!

Go-carts too!
"I pulled out my trusty can of two-in-one oil and zoomed ahead!"

Remembering this also makes me nominate Cosby for the "greatest" because out of all these funny comedians mentioned HE'S the only one I can listen to with my kids.

"They called it 'Dead Man's Hill' because it went straight down for two miles and emptied into the freeway."

Yeah, early Cosby was great, but I think he lost it in the '80s.

In no particular order:

Eddie Izzard ("Long ears along the side, please," and "I'm an executive transvestite!")

Bill Cosby

George Carlin

Jeff Foxworthy ("That's the same river they filmed Deliverance on. If Ned Beatty couldn't make it down that river, a Frenchman in a pair of bicycle shorts doesn't stand a chance.")

Have not heard too much of Richard Pryor's stuff, or Billy Connely's, much to my own disgruntlement, so have yet to form opinions on them.

I'll also give props to Ron White, we'll see how he stands the test of time.

"She was Beelzubub, born with a cigarette in one hand a martini in the other and the first words out of her mouth were, "All right, who's in charge here?"

I saw Ron White's routine on TV while I was in New York...the drunker he got on his cognac the funnier he became!

The biggest letdown for me was Martin Lawrence--I loved him in Nothing to Lose and other film stuff...but I rented a stand-up routine and between a constant spew of MerFers I could barely understand a word he was saying... :-x

I'm not as knowledgeable about stand-up comedians as the rest of you, but I know what I like...and I don't like Martin Lawrence. He isn't funny at all: to me, he's just a guy who rode his way to success by association with Will Smith (the whole "Bad Boys" thing).

During his heyday in the '80s, I thought Eddie Murphy ws the funniest man alive. Well, either him or Robin Williams.

Fond of Bill Cosby...I remember watching some of his appearances on the Tonight Show and laughing so much it hurt. But after The Cosby Show, he seemed to get a bit sanctimonious.

I completely missed Richard Pryor during his prime as a stand-up. Afraid I remember him mostly as the star of a bunch of lame movies in the '80s and '90s. Watched a recent A&E Biography special on him, so I at least did get some sense of the man and his brand of humor.

Sam Kinison...never saw a whole routine of his, but it's not my fault that his material was too much to handle for the major networks. He doesn't mean much to me, anyway.

Loved Jerry Seinfeld's stand-up act. Always enjoyed his appearances on the Tonight Show. "Greatest ever?" Not for me to say, but he's definitely a favorite. (Oddly, his TV show never did much for me.)

Yeah, Ron White is great. I haven't seen too much of his stuff other than Blue Collar Comedy Tour, but I thought he was the best of all four of the guys in that. " 'I'm arresting you for drunk in public....' 'I was drunk in a bar. They threw me into publick!' "

Julian Clary had the quickest wit I've seen.

"Sticky Moments" was a wonderful show.

Jeff Foxworthy, Ron White, and Larry the Cable Guy from the original Blue Collar Comedy Tour DVD - country boy that I am, that's some funny stuff there!

Back in the day, no one was funnier than Eddie Murphy on "Delirious".

How about some Andrew Dice Clay?
