Ok wraiths was the subject ... hmm ... ok ... was just trying to see if it could have been what he was studying that enabled him to live longer.

Yep it certainly sounds like service to the Land and/or Earthpower has something to do with it, but is the study/knowledge of Lore much different to the service to the Earthpower?

good question... well i guess that the unfettered would use his lore in some way, that i have no way of knowing... i'm forestal after all, we dont talk to the unfettered :P

and the unfettered would be in service to earthpower... that just makes sense, i dont know how they were or did, but it makes sense to me that they were...

Just for the record, here's Elena to Covenant:
"This has been true for as long as there has been such lore in the Land. The Old Lords lived to great age. They were not long-lived as the Giants are - because that is the natural span of their people. No, it was the service of the Earthpower which preserved them, secured them from age long past their normal years. High Lord Kevin lived centuries as people live decades.

"So, too, it is in this present time, though in a lesser way. We do not bring out all the potency of the Lore. And the Warlore does not preserve its followers, so Quaan and his warriors alone of your former comrades carry their full burden of years. But those of the rhadhamaerl and the lillianrill, and the Lords who follow Kevin's Lore, age more slowly than others. This is a great boon, for it extends our strength. But also it causes grief-"

She fell silent for a moment, sighed quietly to herself as if she were remembering an old injury. But when she spoke again, her voice was clear and steady. "So it has always been. Lord Mhoram has seen ten times seven summers - yet hardly carries fifty of them..."

So she referred both to serving the Earthpower, and to following lore.

So everybody is right! :)

well, my theory stretches way back to when the thread was on topic :D

I always thought that the reason the phrase "Banas Nimoram" was found mixed in with the known words of power was because the Unfettered was calling upon the power of the words to help him save the Celebration of Spring, not that "Banas Nimoram" is itself a word(s) of power, as one theory goes...

So do you think the Seven Words are exactly seven words? Of course, we would have no way of knowing which of the following different words are Words and which are just words. :)
Melenkurion
abatha
Binas
mill
Banas
Nimoram
khabaal
Duroc
Minas

Or do you think the Seven Words are seven phrases (with a possible total of well more than seven words) that, though we don't know what they mean, you do not believe are the names of Powers/rites/phenomenon?

I've often wondered about the 7 words too. Melenkurion Abatha is a PHRASE of invocation of power according to the handy-dandy glossary at the end of the books...so I'm inclined to agree with Fist. Also Landwaster said something about Wurd, Word, etc., so that would seem to fit in too. Very intruiging to think that we might finally find out in the Last Chronicles!

I certainly hope so. And wouldn't it be really wonderful to see Kevin at work making and hiding his wards?

I believe that the 7 words very well could be 7 "words," and that one was perhaps very difficult to figure out from the wards.

1. Melekurion
2. Abatha
3. Duroc
4. Minas/Binas (hmmm...who was pronouncing it more correctly?)
5. Mill
6. Kabal
7. Something that translates roughly to "Death to my enemies!" or some such...anyway, something that would be hard to figure out due to the Oath of Peace.

not hard to figure out, just hard to use.

i personally did believe taht the 7 words were infact 7 words, but now i'm not so sure, i'm buying into this 7 rites thing.... it sounds good to me...

and as for minas/binas, its very likely that both were correct, just one is used out of context.

as a point of fact... how would a lord go about decyphering the wards if they had no way of looking at the language?

and why not get the bloodguard to translate it for them? or at least give them the simple tool of old lord speak...

i think that really really obvious... but obviously the people of the land dont think that way

... i just typed that at about 100mph :S

Who said minas and binas aren't two different words?? :?:

As for the Bloodguard helping, they weren't about to help the Lords in their quests for knowledge/power/weapons. They Vowed to protect the Lords, not help them in this way. Look what happened the one time they did help! Elena proved that the Lords shouldn't have powers that they couldn't get on their own.

yeah but the 7 words are alot less powerful than the last ward....

they also proved that rush decisions are very very rarely well thought out.

surely they could ahve given them a little help...

and by that i mean a few words here and there, not the most powerful source in the land! jeesh, what do u take me for? stupid?
