Coverting the Unconverted

Post by A Gunslinger »

I have just gotten 2 folks to start reading the TC series! If LFB works for 'em...I intend to get them both to sign up HERE!

I love turning people onto SRD. Sharing the work makes me feel right good, dammit!

I recently converted a friend of mine, and she's a member here now, but she doesn't post much. She's on her 2nd read of 1st Chronicles now.

One person I haven't yet gotten to read the chronicles is my wife. Ironically, she is an English major, and reads a lot... <scratches head> I'm not sure why she has resisted my pleas and cajoling so far...

I got my wife to read LFB once, she hated it and wouldn't read any of the other books. This was way before the Watch and I just wanted someone to discuss Covenant with.

I have tried to 'convert' several people; some people just don't like the connotation of dark fantasy, and others have had a hard time just getting past the first 30 pages or so, to the 'good stuff'. Once he shows up on KW, it gets more exciting.....

My best friend read it before I met him, and we discuss it all the time. He has been to the Watch, but isnt too involved.

To read Covenant, you have to be a mature reader. It isnt exactly Harry Potter, and some people just dont read to think, they read to not think.

Dukka you should try to get your wife to read Mordant's Need. It might help ease her way into SRD fandom.

I gave her a copy of MoHD when we first started going out (gah!----1997?!). She read the first several chapters and put it down. I keep singing the praises of Donaldson to her, but apparently my singing voice is lacking...

Strangely enough, the one thing might actually get her to read LFB... We watched the first episode of FBH together (this was after I showed her the pic of the author in the FBH bed...). She thought it was hilarious. That might be her 'in'. :)

I would be absolutely giddy with joy if FBH was her in to SRD fandom. That would RULE! We actually get alot of emails from people who have been shown FBH by friends and so have now started reading LFB thanks to the show. It's totally cool.

FBH does rock. I must say (perhaps cuz I am a male?) that i found the beginning of MoHD to drag and DRAG. The characters just didn't wow me.

Ok, I will agree that the beginning of MoHD wasn't a real upper but I absolutely LOVE Terisa's journey. She is actually one of my favorite female charactors in any of SRD's works.

Terisa started out as well....kind of a drip. I too liked her journey, however. Pound ofr pound, as far as SRD's gals go...give me Min Donner!

I often tried to convince people to read the cronicles, but I only succeded with one friend (who is also here at the watch and who showed my the way here).
But I agree with iQuestor that most people "read to not think" and that doesn´t work with the cronicles (of ther other books of SRD I can´t say anything, because I don´t know them (most of them aren´t obtainable in Germany.
Dukkha: maybe your wife refuses to read these books ´cause you try to convince her.

Dukka. Tell her she might not grasp the finer points....then flee.

Back around '82, '83 during my junior and senior year in high school I discovered LFB and got all my friends who read fantasy( and that was no small group) to read the Chronicles. There was even a good number of sci fi fans who didn't care for fantasy who I got to read the Chronicles and they all said it was BETTER the the sci fi they loved so much- quite a tribute to SRD's writing, story telling ability, and engrossing, descriptive style.

In my opinion, LFB sets the stage... it's interesting in it's own ways, but The Illearth War is when everything starts coming to bear. If they get through the first two and aren't enjoying the books.... they might give the second books a try still.... but if they dont enjoy the stories after LFB and The Illearth War... maybe they're just not going to enjoy the stories.
