Which author am I?

Post by taraswizard »

A few years ago, I took a quiz like this, or maybe this one, and I came out as Walter Jon Williams. ATT, I almost confused that result as saying I was "Jack Williamson".

ATT, the Tor Editor Theresa Neilson-Hayden tried to answer the quiz as a another author. When she answered as David Brin, she got the result as Greg Benford, and her comment was "that's about the same thing". And Lucimay you should be William Gibson, you're nothing like Brin (who's a little pompous and very egotistical).

Olaf Stapledon

Standing outside the science fiction "field", he wrote fictional explorations of the futures of whole species and galaxies.

I am: Hal Clement (Harry C. Stubbs)

A quiet and underrated master of "hard science" fiction who, among other things, foresaw integrated circuits back in the 1940s.

Which science fiction writer are you?

Interesting. Clarke is my favorite sf writer, so I was hoping I'd get him. However, this Clement chap seems similar to Clarke, in outlook and appearance!

Saw this 2 or 3 yrs ago & discussed on another board. I'd tried to see what combos got me tagged as, say, Larry Niven or Gene Wolfe. Then I discovered there was a set of possible answers: (the following was copied from the page code)
Spoiler
/* The SF writers are each represented by one letter, as follows:
a: Isaac Asimov
b: Alfred Bester
c: Arthur C. Clarke
d: David Brin
e: Octavia E. Butler
f: Philip José Farmer
g: Gregory Benford
h: Frank Herbert
i: Samuel R. Delany
j: Jerry Pournelle
k: Mickey Spillane
l: Ursula LeGuin
m: Stanislav Lem
n: William Gibson
o: Olaf Stapledon
p: Philip K. Dick
q: Hal Clement
r: Robert A. Heinlein
s: E.E. "Doc" Smith
t: James Tiptree, Jr.
u: Jules Verne
v: Kurt Vonnegut
w: H.G. Wells
x: Cordwainer Smith
y: Ayn Rand
z: John Brunner

DISCLAIMER: Generally speaking, the answers that I attach to each writer
should not be construed as necessarily accurate or factual. When I have no
idea what the right answer is, I just make one up.
*/
The site author has appended some interesting comments to the code regarding developments since that time. Apparently some authors on & off the list have tried this themselves!
<!--
So far, to my knowledge, two authors who are among the possible answers have
taken the quiz, and neither came up as themslves. It told Jerry Pournelle
he was Heinlein, and it told Gregory Benford he was Clarke. So the thing's
measured accuracy rate so far is 0%.

Some other authors whom I have heard of but who are not possible answers:
- Joe Haldeman got Cordwainer Smith (and he also took Which Housepaint Are You?)
- Pat Cadigan got Clarke, and Bester on a second try
- Michael Moorcock got LeGuin
- Mary Gentle has reported getting both Stapledon and Delany
- Joel Rosenberg got Farmer
- Neil Gaiman got Delany
- L. Neil Smith got Herbert
- Larry Niven got Farmer
- Emma Bull got Delany
Apparently there are many others who have tried it without me finding out the
results. Some further writers whose work I personally am unfamiliar with:
- Michael Burstein got Heinlein
- Laurent Genefort got Asimov
- David Dvorkin got Tiptree
- Charles Stross got Heinlein
-->
I wonder if a comparable fantasy page will ever be done, & how SRD would fare on it?
It is said with some truth that there is no progress without loss; and it is always said, by those who wish to destroy good things, that progress requires it. No great insight or experience of the world is necessary to see that such people really care nothing for progress. They wish to destroy for their profit, and they, being clever, try to persuade us that progress and change are synonymous.

this is obviously a test for blokes... :P

I did like this question though...

4) How big of an asshole are you?
I am so sweet and harmless that nobody could ever wish ill of me.
I try to practice common courtesy -- which I don't find to be terribly common.
I do not believe someone of my stature should have to suffer fools gladly.
I'll shit on you like you've never been shit on before.

Stalinslav Lem
This pessimistic Pole has spent a whole career telling ironic stories of futility and frustration. Yet he is also a master of wordplay so witty that it sparkles even when translated into English.

:( Pessimistic? :( Oh well. Never heard of the guy, I'll have to check up on him.

EDIT-At least he's unique. Nice!

If you want to look up stuff about him, it might help to know his name is actually spelt "Stanislaw".

Another point of identification. People never spell my name right either! Mathew instead of Matthew.

Well, not that often, but I've seen it happen. Would probably be worse for someone named Mathew.
