Well, Disney doesn't have an answer for that (not that I can find). However I would say the likely answer is...because it's a CARTOON! Ya know, if you start asking those kind of questions you're going to have to ask why Mickey Mouse and co can talk!!!

Goofy is a humanized dog (ala Mickey) where as Pluto is just a dog.

Pluto has to feel crapped on. If Goofy is a dog in the Disney universe, then what is Pluto? A special needs dog? And what about The Smurfs? There is only one Smurfette, what is up with that? She would just be S.O.L if she were a lesbian.
