The same was happening with my pc last year. I found out that power supplies are very susceptible to power spikes - not necessarily surges - but fluctuations in the source. The store recommended I get a Universal Power Supply - which is essentially a battery that supplies clean power to the pc and charges up from the mains power. Since I got it, my pc has been running perfectly. No loss of power packs.Nerdanel wrote:I'm going to start writing my moves soon. There's still a bit of time, I think.
[off-topic]If I were a goddess in real life I think I would use a DRP to knock some sense into hardware manufacturers that can't make power supplies that work as intended. In less than four months three out of three power supplies in my computer have been defective... And the first was defective for a long time before it, and I kept suspecting everything else for the random crashes... The replacement fried itself and a fuse. While waiting for a warranty replacement (as if I wanted another one of the same) I got a loan power source made by the same firm that had made the first broken supply (Antec, by the way), and even though it's a different model it's exhibiting exactly the same behavior, and even booting up is an exercise in adventure. I'm writing this at my parents' computer. I just needed to vent a little.[/off-topic]

A good surge protector (and there's a big difference between a surge protector and a power strip, so be careful. Also, a power surge and a voltage spike are synonymous) would do the same thing, though it doesn't give you any juice if you lose main power like an UPS (Uninterruptable rather than Universal). If it's a common problem, I assume you either live in an old house or an old neighborhood. If it's the former, you should probably call an electrician, since overvoltages can lead to shorts which can lead to fire. The latter, you should probably call the electric company (I've heard stories of it being caused by anything from dying transformers to an incorrectly installed doorbell in the neighborhood). 'Dirty' voltage can also cause decreased performance in other electrical products like TVs and stereos.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Likewise, I am arming my main fleet in the event you and your allies decide to invade my realm. You saw what I did to Queeaqueg's land and his people. I am more than capable of shattering your lands, mutating your people into cripples, and transforming your forests into Entka.Fist and Faith wrote:Well, I'm usually having to throw at least 2 into healing Shakari from the latest catastrophe. I leave that as a warning to you.
"Oh of course," the Navigator said with faint mocking in his voice, "you have probably heard of House Praetus. We have a palace on Holy Terra. Like all powerful groups, we also have our enemies. Do you honestly think someone like you matters?" - A dissolute noble.

A surge protector won't do any good if the power outlet isn't grounded, though. I can't remember if I have a grounded outlet in the entire room. (I have only a room for myself, so I can't very well have an extension cord to the kitchen.) I have a vague memory that the outlet where the computer is plugged isn't grounded, at least, but there's another one under the bed that might bear looking at when I get home. The block of flats is from the eighties, so I think it shouldn't be that old?
Anyway, I've looked around and Antec seems to have really trashed their formerly-good reputation as a power source maker in the recent years. One source said that 15% of the power sources of their Sonata II cases had to be returned to the manufacturer. (I bought the first Sonata, which supposedly wasn't as bad, but being older it had more time for its gradual breakdown.) Two of the three problematic power sources in my case are Antec (with identical symptoms) while the remaining one might be just a fluke.

I will increase the allocation if that helpsMurrin wrote:I am suffering from a severe lack of PM box space. The turn will be coming soon... by the way, I think the earlier suggestion of setting turns every two weeks will probably be the way to go. The processing step takes much longer now, and real life is getting a bit in the way as well. Simjen suggested we might have turns every two weeks, and deadlines a few days before the new turn (for example, deadlines on thursdays if the turns come on sunday). I'm sorry, but all things considered, there are a lot of you

I'm, fine with this. Truth be told, the game is advancing to the point where it's nice to be able to have two weeks to plan and maneveur my god around!

Indeed! Whatever makes that part shorter, or at least more predictable, is the way to go!Murrin wrote:(waiting between submission and results is harder than waiting for the next turn anyway, heh).

I'm fine with the two week thing too - sigh! But could we have the deadline on a Friday night not Thursday night, if we're changing things? Friday's the one day I can really concentrate, Wednesdays and Thursdays in my life tend to be too hectic for internet!
What Menolly said.... if we are going to two weeks per turn, I think we all need to make an effort to post more to keep up the excitement levels! Any chance we can get a NPC goddess of dragons and food, then Menolly might get so frustrated watching that she'll have to join in????
PS I've decided to make a modern-day compilation tape for all my divine comrades, as a sign of my appreciation for all the fun Pantheon has given me. The first song's up there ^, the next one just here....
(like the best comp tapes there should be something for everyone, but you should be able to spot a common theme......
