Here's an underrated fella: Lindsey Buckingham. If you have heard him do any picking and such, you'd know what i mean...his work on the FM singles was nothing spectacular...but his work on the late 90's and since AND his live stuff... none too shabby. Don't take my word for it....

ImageNot only is he amazing, but his work with the Dixie Dregs: truly amazing! 8) 8) 8) (and, someone told me he replaced Ritchie Blackmore on Deep Purple, for touring purposes)

Morse I can take or leave. He was OK with the Dixie Dregs, but I thought his work with Kansas and Deep Purple was pretty weak.

Buckingham's a complete a$$, but a great player when he's not completely coked-out.

Spring 2011 Listmania - Top 3 Guitar Gods

Post by TheFallen »

Now I'm sure that this one's been done to death many times, but as it seems to be season of the list, it's guitar god time - top 3 and second 5. Honourable mentions, plus a couple that you're excluding and why, if you wish. Here goes nothing...

The Holy Triumvirate
Dave Gilmour
Ritchie Blackmore
Jimmy Page

The Lesser Pantheon
Jimi Hendrix
Carlos Santana
Steve Vai
Billy Gibbons
Gary Moore

Honourable Demigods
Angus Young
Eddie Van Halen
David Knopfler
Stevie Ray Vaughan
Ry Cooder
JJ Cale
John Lee Hooker
Bo Diddley
Johnny Winter

Not Worthy
Slash - Massively overrated.
Yngwie Malmsteen - Flawless skills but all technique and no soul.
Eric Clapton - JJ Cale's far better.
Newsflash: the word "irony" doesn't mean "a bit like iron"

Shockingly, some people have claimed that I'm egocentric... but hey, enough about them

Hmmm...
I'd have to move Eddie V.H. into the top group...but I don't want to lose any of them guys...so it would have to be a tetrad.

And I'd switch Carlos' and Stevie Ray's groups.

And, even though it's a bit off-style/fame level for your list, I can't stand any guitar lists that don't have Allan Holdsworth on them.
[At least in the lesser pantheon section...but probably at the top, making it a quintet.]

The rest of it, I can live with.

I'll add the likes of Derek Trucks and Jimmy Herring to the mix.

Derek Trucks is the son of Butch Trucks, drummer for the Allman Bros. The kid had his own touring blues band at the age of like 14 or something. He was good back then and has since grown into an amazingly soulfull and rocking blues guitarist. Having grown up in the Bros. family, he is no doubt inherently influenced by their music, and likely by Duane Allman in particular. But Derek has developed his own style which incorporates many styles.

Jimmy Herring played for Col. Bruce Hampton and the Aquarium Rescue Unit. He has since gone on to play for Phil Lesh and Friends, the Allman Bros., Jazz is Dead, and is currently the lead guitarist for Widespread Panic. I've always loved him for his liquid fast finger work, but often felt like he was a bit too mechanical or technical with his playing. But over the years he too has expanded his repertoir by playing with Phil and Warren Haynes and many other musicians. He can be mind blowing.

One of my favorite live guitar experiences was at a Derek Trucks Band show with Jimmy Herring as guest guitarist. It was a tiny show, maybe 40 or 50 people in a small venue in Asheville, NC in '96. And with Jimmy on stage, Derek could focus on playing slide, which is sort of his specialty. They've played together alot over the years.

Guitar Goddess anyone?

Orianthi is a lass from Adelaide who had the Michael Jackson guitar gig for the tour that never eventuated. She's done some reasonable commercial type stuff, toured and played with Carlos and few others including Stevie Vai check out the link of Vai and her getting it on..... lovely modal harmonies. She's hot (and not bad on the eye either!).

I believe this is her composition too.....

I was expecting more...Vai stole the show. She really didn't show anything...

On the other hand, take a look at Courtney Cox (not the one that you are thinking). She is a guitarist from the female tribute band to Iron Maiden, the Iron Maidens.

She shreds!!!
