The priests were, however, wrong to take matters into their own hands and for that, I feel they should be punished. Let us talk privately what that punishment should be.

My priests are charged with trading and making money, not being a police force. That is why you are there. I will remind the priests of their duties and tell them to leave the diabolists to you. If your soldiers understand that they are there to keep diabolism at bay and nothing else, then we should have an accord.

Regardless, I'm sure that we can have our followers come to an understanding.
This sounds acceptable. I will issue new orders the soldiers. I will also add, that in light of these current events, I will also be issues specific orders on self defense. Death is unnacceptable. I would rather them to leave the city than to start a war within Magran. However, should their lives come to threat, and escape is unavailable, they will be doing all possible to save themselves.

This is extreme in the upmost, and I anticipate no problems, but with these marches, it is always better to cover all of ones bases, no?

Even I think it is strange that I have not involved myself in the discussions of the Trading Guild. Jove is my Wife, after all. Part of the reason is obvious: Shakari has been hit by a number of disasters in the last couple years. The other reason is that I didn't know what I might trade. I am not a businessgod, and couldn't imagine what I might have that others would want. But maybe I'll start with some simple things. I don't mean to brag, but the best Maple syrup comes from Shakari! Selling it seems like a natural, eh? :D

Also, it should come as no surprise that there are some wonderfully asccomplished Wood-carvers among my followers. Perhaps some of them would like to spread their fame far and wide by putting some masterpieces on the market.

An unanticipated side-effect of the generousity of many of you during my battle with the Abomination is that Shakari is currently strong and healthy beyond my wildest dreams. So maybe I have some Power to spare to get involved with the Guild. :D

I thank you.

I agree Adomorn. Better safe than sorry. I always feel more comfortable with a sound investment. I believe that your soldiers are a sound investment and I do not think that you will have any further problems. My people are merchants, not fighters, so these marches are sure to be short-lived. Know also that regardless of the outcome, their retirements will stay intact and be distributed to them as originally agreed. It is their money, after all, and I won't deprive them of that - nor will my people. I will make sure that Angus tells them this. Their service has been sincerely offered with the best intentions and for that, I am appreciative.

Melirelle--the Fiends, over whom you have seized authority, have been making incursions into my realm. Please bring this activity to an end, and keep your people under control in the future.

Tsaloga,

You are difficult to find privately, so I will make an appeal here. I have no more information about the horde of orcs that is marching on Aldian than this:

I thank you, deeply for keeping the issue of the soldiers future, and their pay, seperate from these problems that seem to plague our workings together. I can tell you that a place to sleep, food and pay are the most important thing to a soldier, and know that they will serve faithfully because of it.

Maeror!

We have had our well-documented differences, and I hope last turn has proved my good intentions towards you and yours.

I have apprehended a false preacher in Thellarr, who under interrogation claims to be have sent by you. Obviously if this is true, you acted while we were still at odds.

However, now that I hope we have no cause for enmity, I would appreciate it, if you would bring an end to any more of this type of scheme that you may have initiated in the past.

Undine, for what it's worth, despite appearances, it will take a good deal to convince me that Maeror is behind this false preacher. I am convinced that the two of you and Adomorn are all acting with complete honesty and nobility.

High above the dry, dusty winds of Scirocco, a phoenix wings his way happily through the sky. Suddenly, another winged creature appears before him in the sky. Golden plumed, and with a birdsong that dazzles his mind, she soon finds herself the object of his pursuit.

Months later, a crystalline egg lies in a hollow in the hot desert sands. Over millennia, the hot desert winds blow the sands up and over the egg, creating a den that both warms and cradles the shell...

*************************************************

“The mists have parted! New lands to explore; new wind currents to glide.”

Such were the thoughts of Raucous, as he sat on the ledge of the weyrhall, listening to the weyrling master instruct his hatch mates on another tedious maneuver to best ride the winds. Of course, he was supposed to be paying attention to the lesson, but tonight was Dispatch, when he and his hatch mates were released from instruction and, with much celebration, permitted to set out joyously on their own.
*************************************************

"Sand, sand, and more sand! Not a buck or ewe to hunt, nor a cool refreshing lake to dive into for fish. Pheh, fish…But what I wouldn’t give for a fish right now!"

Head drooping, hide patchy from lack of oiling and scored from wind-blown sand, Raucous continued to glide over the seemingly endless desert. To have discovered the edge of the desert two and a half weeks ago, right after feasting on a wild grouse of a size unheard-of across the waters in his native lands, had seemed a happy circumstance. Over several months, he had journeyed beyond the parted mists to the new lands, stopping overnight to rest when land was beneath him, which was more frequent than not. Food had been plentiful as well, until he entered the desert.

Raucous was amazed at the lack of developed races beyond the parted mists. Grazing animals, carnivores, birds, and insects were plentiful, but he saw no sign of cities, or of nomadic wanderers.

"I should have turned around after three days,” he thought again for a time beyond count. “I would have been able to hunt and bathe after six days, and not be withering away on this arid current."

Onward he flew, growing more and more despondent, until the sun started its wondrously colorful descent from the skies. “All the sand in the air really does enhance the sunset here,” he thought as he curled up in a sandbank for the night.
*************************************************

Raucous awoke with a start, and then wondered why. The sun was just barely rising; there was a faint purple haze off to the east. But as he lowered his head back down to return to sleep, he heard it. “Birdsong! But the most lovely birdsong, like nothing I have ever heard before."

Rising slowly off the sandbank, he shook his hide to rid himself of as much sand as possible, and looked about him. His eyes widened, all three lids, even the transparent nictitating membrane he had kept closed since entering the desert, retreating.

There before him was an oasis. And what an oasis! Lush and green, with a huge grotto amid an outcropping of stone upon which he could perch.

"That wasn’t there last night. I know it wasn’t there!"

Slowly he padded into the grotto. The cool waters soothed his hide. And he feasted on the colorful fish that swam around him, the thought of hunting the glorious golden plumed birds that were singing that wonderful melody never entering his mind…

Sated and refreshed, he again curled up for a nap, this time on a rocky ledge above the grotto. But he couldn’t sleep. Deep in the recesses of his mind, the thrum of the Hatching started to reverberate. All dragons attended a Hatching when they felt the thrum.

"Impossible. I haven’t seen a single weyr anywhere beyond the parted mists."

But it wouldn’t leave, and slowly grew stronger within him.

Rousing himself again, he stood on the ledge and assumed the Watch mentality. Something glimmered in the sands, about a stone’s throw away from the edge of the oasis.

As he launched into the air to check out the glimmer, the oasis slowly faded from sight…
*************************************************

Landing next to the glimmer in the sands, Raucous cautiously brushed away the build up of millennia with a wing-tip. There before him lay a lone dragon egg made of a deep blue translucent crystal! And it was in the throes of the Hatching, rocking.

Sitting back on his haunches, Raucous let loose with the Song of Hatching Welcome thrum.

Continuing to rock, the egg oscillated from side to side, until a crack appeared in its side. Then it suddenly stopped. Raucous kept thrumming, but was concerned, as this was definitely not the norm. Abruptly, a human fist punched through the crack! And still Raucous thrummed, although he had no idea what was coming from this egg.

As the shell fell apart, out of it stepped a fully-grown human female. And, from the humans Raucous had seen, this one was quite the specimen of the species. Long flowing white hair, tall and lithe, the woman approached him and gently laid one hand upon his brow.

Image

Birdsong! Birdsong flowing through his mind and into his being!!

Without a thought, Raucous gave the woman the highest honor a dragon could bestow upon another species, and lowered himself into the Invitation to Ride. The woman smiled gently and climbed on.

"m’Lady, I am called Raucous. Who, no what, are you and by what are you called?" Raucous asked in the manner of dragons, sending the thought directly to her mind.

Slowly shaking her head, the woman pointed at her throat and smiled sadly. But then the Birdsong infused Raucous again, and her thoughts became his.

"I am O-gon-cho, Mistress of Air and Light. I was conceived millennia ago, but until my Prophet came upon me I remained unformed. We are now One, you and I, but I can not retain this form at all times. You will mostly perceive me through Birdsong and know my meaning.

"These lands on this side of the parted mists will soon be under contention. I have no wish to engage in struggles for possession, and yet I wish to call my beloved dragons to me. You and I will fly together for awhile, and you will regain your strength and vigor. When we part, I wish you to continue your exploration of these lands, and find appropriate locations for weyrs.

"Then, return to your home and lead those who will follow me to their destined weyrs. This not only includes my beloved dragons, but any races who wish to tend, and possibly ride, them. It must be a free choice; I am weakened by those mandated to serve me, instead of doing so of their own free will."

Raucous absorbed all this with wonder and trepidation, yet growing in self-awareness that this was his calling. As they flew on together he fully accepted his calling and vowed to himself he would do anything to be in O-gon-cho’s presence again.

They flew together for 40 days, not once stopping for rest or refreshment. Yet Raucous grew stronger, blissfully ignorant of the time passing. As they flew, Raucous noted locations of potential weyrs per O-gon-cho’s request.

As the sun rose on the 41st day, O-gon-cho let it be known she wished to land. As they settled to the ground, Raucous felt the piercing pain of the Birdsong retreating from his body. He gasped, and prostrated himself before her, begging her to not leave him alone.

I am always with you, beloved of all my beloved. Always remember, where Will and Freedom meet, Seek the Heart of the Flame."

With that, she kissed Raucous’ knobbed forehead, and under her lips a device took form. The shape of a dragon’s egg, it was the color of flame and upon a cursory glance looked to contain a swirling cosmos or vortex.

But look closer and the forming embryo of a dragon can be seen within…

Here stands Maeror, Grief, the Healer and the Hooded, carer for the living and custodian of the dead. Tragedy Maeror's domain, the relief of suffering this god's chosen task; long pondered is the question: How can this world be healed?
In Death he shows them peace, and in life she can remove their ills. But ever more does the god's task grow, and relief given can only come after ill has fallen. There must be more to give.
And so, Maeror feels the mists part, and a new world opens to the god's awareness, to the Lord's touch and the Lady's caress, and the arrival of this new awareness comes as a sign, and signal; and the Lady of Health turns, and the Lord of Death turns to face the East, and they speak, their words ring out in unison, one voice together and apart:
It is time.

Hail brothers and sisters in divinity. I know my revelation concerning the knot in the Fabric of Reality was not particularly welcome as I am sure we had all hoped that our previous expending of power had healed any impurities. However, I have two further things that I wish to share with you all that I hope will be more pleasing.

The first relates to the establishment by a number of my followers of the Order of the Amethyst Fate. The Order of the Amethyst Fate was originally created to pursue those who attempted to cheat Fate and rectify the situation. This immediately filled me with concern as it suggested that a number of my children see Fate as unyielding and implacable - something written in stone, never to be changed.

The truth is that while each and every one of us has a Fated path along which we travel through life, there are ways in which the direction of that path may be altered. Each and every one of us, as deities, has a small group of chosen individuals whose lives we direct, beyond the reach of Fate. Furthermore, as the Goddess of Luck Chisi La'Roo has the ability to place of touch of fortune on a person's life, removing them from the hands of Fate.

Finally, anyone may work to change their own destiny. Fate is not opposed to this at all, despite what some of my followers might have you believe. However, Fate requires that for everything that is gained, something should be lost, and for eberything that is surrendered, something should be received. Thus are the scales balanced and Fate appeased.

One example of this is the choice of undeath. Those who established the Order of the Amethyst Fate believe that those who made such a choice were attempting to cheat Fate by escaping death. However, although they gain freedom from mortality, those who choose such an existance lose much more. Their ability to feel love or fear may be reduced, and many will never again set eyes upon the sun.

The Order of the Amethyst Heart, for so I have renamed them, have been given my blessing, but only after these things were carefully explained to them. While they will still seek out those who try to cheat Fate, only those who would change their destiny but pay no price need fear. With my blessing goes my watchful eye, for I would not be embarrassed by their actions. I shall keep them in my thoughts that my brothers and sisters need not worry.

The second piece of news that I have to share is more joyful still. In the fair city of Kavoc, which was once named Vixel by the foul Queeaqueg, I have established Galgazit University. Galgazit University is an institution of magical learning open to those of any race and any religious affiliation. Everything from basic spellcasting to complex rituals shall be taught, with the safe use of magic being foremost in the thoughts of all the faculty.

It is my desire to serve not only my own people but also the entire Pantheon and all of Eiran in this, Therefore I urge you, my brothers and sisters, to send any of those among your children who have the desire to wield magic and the potential to achieve great things to enrole at Galgazit University.

Your sister

In the next few seasons I intend to elevate the importance of my Hospital in Solimn, and to expand the teaching and service available from its acolytes further across our world. If any of you would be willing to accept the establishment of Hospitals in any of your cities, please inform me so that it may be arranged.
