Yep, Crimso's a lot of things. About six or seven different bands, I think.
There are a few common motifs: improvisation, complex polyrhythms, Fripp's "falling-down-the-stairs" guitar style. Crimson has aggressiveness, but they just as often pack melodic ballads. Belew kind of softens Fripp's cerebral journeys.
As far as being metal or prog: I don't think they're either, though they have strong elements of both. Not sure what they are, and I kinda like it that way.

This current tangent on whether KC is metal or not completely misses the point of Lucimay's post (which inadvertantly started all this, it seems). Watch the Youtube footage! Sure, it doesn't do the original recording justice, but you can still tell that's some amazing music. My wife just got me that DVD for my birthday, and it instantly became one of my favorite concert DVDs. It has some of the most amazing sound I've ever heard. Great surround mix. Brilliant clarity. Very little compression--sounds good at all frequency levels. So much better than their 90s DVD from the Thrak tour.
The only problem is Belew's appearance. I know he's getting old, but come on man! You're putting on a show. Try combing your hair and wearing something besides a wife beater! He looks like he brushed off the Cheetos dust and left the trailer park just in time to make it to the performance.
Oh, and I've heard some Belew that might be loosely described as "rap" or "country." But just as metal fans might be offended by calling them metal, rap and country fans might feel similarly offended. And why not? KC is doing it better than they are!

however the You Tube reference reminds me that there are some great Crimso bits on there. And I found an absolute gem with an improvisation bit from Bruford and a Danish pianist named (sp) Badtlan (?). Wow, nearly made me wet myself.

(I would also like to say that there are moments on THRAK that flirt with metal) I think Fripp even once called it "Intellegent Metal".
I also *know* I read somewhere that 21st Century Schizoid Man is considered one of the major "proto-metal" songs. (Along with songs Like "I can see for miles" and "Helter Skelter")

Crimson is touring!!!!
However, although touring, they so far only have ten dates in the US (grrrrr.) I think they are trying out new material for an upcoming album.
The new line-up has Fripp, Belew, Levin, Matellano, and the drummer from Porcupine Tree (can't recall hi name).
Yah, 2 drummers again... hmmm...

Sinfield did a solo album called 'Still' shortly after Lake left Crimson and also did lyrics on the Lake section of ELPs works album. I bought the album together with a mate who bought the only other copy in the shop. The cover on one was pink whilst the other was blue, not sure if they were a multitude of colours, but maybe one was a rarity?
