Kevin's Bandage

Post by dlbpharmd »

What was the significance of the bandage worn by Kevin, when he appeared to Elena in Earthroot?

possible significance :
- spirits can still run into stuff
- there's a low lintel somewhere in the passages under skyweir
- hurtloam is hard to find on the other side
- might have been a headache, he seemed pretty intense ...
Do you think I like being this dangerous?

It's the spot where Lord Foul took his soul... ha, kidding. I love that theory.

I've heard it mentioned by others that it could be something to do with the wound Covenant suffers before being summoned to the Land again. Dunno.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

This seems most likely. :D

Maybe he got hurt and put the bandage on just before the Ritual. And so he's in the same condition he was when he died. (I'm assuming he did not get the injury during the Ritual, because I don't imagine he would have had opportunity to dress the wound. What with all hell breaking loose.)

This was discussed long ago - I don't think it even had its own thread - and all I can remember is there is a logical reason for the bandage, but nothing else substantial. Hopefully we'll come up with more this time, what with so many more members contributing. :)

I vaguely remember that. Either of the theories, "it was because Covenant had a gash on his head" or "he'd fought a battle", sounds reasonable. Or the two in combination, really. It also shows he's not this invincible guy who's can to fix everything just because Elena wanted him to.

Or maybe Lord Foul can do nasty stuff to you even after you are dead... On the other hand, the law of death wasn't broken until Elena called on Kevin so it's not that likely.

From the book it seems to be a serious wound: "He had a mouth like a cut, eyes full of the effects of Desecreation, and on his forehead was a bandage which seemed to cover some mortal wound."

I can't think of any other logical explanation beyond the idea that SRD wanted his spectre to appear injured in some obvious way given how he died.

Wow, I didn't even notice that in the book. But it strikes a cord with me, and after a minute of wondering it came to me. Maybe Foul was doing something subliminal here. I recall Covenant had injured his forehead that time he entered the Land. Maybe Foul wanted Covenant to further associate himself with Kevin Landwaster, in order to get Covenant to dispair and break the Arch. It certainly isn't beyond the realm of possibility that Foul himself bandaged the body of Kevin just for that purpose. But that's just what I'd have done if I was Foul.... Always playing mind games, that Foul.

That would certainly be a possibility, if Foul knew that Covenant was coming centuries later. And maybe we'll learn whether or not that's the case in the Last Chrons. :)

he wouldnt have needed to have buried and dressed Kevin personally to create this image Dan speaks of ..

I think this is the most logical explanation for this anomalous image.

Foul was good at playing head games .. not only with TC ..

I had made the observation that the bandage on Kevin's forehead is like the bruise (bump, wound, whatever) on Covenant's forehead when he's talking to Joan on the phone and falls and hits his forehead on the table in the beginning of the book. I don't know if there is any relation between the two. I just found it interesting.
