Heh, I never had any intention of trying to resist reading the first chapter. I know I'm not that strong.
SRD managed to convey Linden's sense of panic, her desperation to reach Covenant and Jeremiah, very strongly. AT one point I started to panic slightly while reading.
I wish May 9 would hurry up and get here.
You do not hear, and so you cannot be redeemed.
In the name of their ancient pride and humiliation, they had made commitments with no possible outcome except bereavement.
He knew only that they had never striven to reject the boundaries of themselves.
Grrrr too long till the Second Half, very interesting though, and some great lines. Spoiler
It seems TC and J are unLawful, seen as they cannot tolerate the Staff Of Law's power.
But if you're all about the destination, then take a fucking flight.
We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And we're definitely going to hell, but we'll have all the best stories to tell.
How is is that the power Linden summons from the Staff of Law is "soft and clean as cornflowers", when in Runes, the staff responds to her use of it with magic that is yellow-coloured?
I found Covenant's one line just as exasperating as a whole half-chapter of Linden panicking. They both just needed to calm down a little instead of going off the deep end.
Can understand why they might be a little stressed however.

Covenant's line didn't bother me. Well, it bothered me in the sense of "what the hell is going on?!" but not in the sense of me wanting to kick him. Covenant has never been the most stable and even-tempered person, and I thought his wrathful snarl was fairly consistent with his personality.
Yeah, I know. Both Covenant and Linden were fairly true to their personalities. I just wish they'd both take a few deep breaths and calm down a little.

After reading what was posted... the fact that TC and jeremiah cannot be touched by Linden or the staff has some strange implications.
1) Is their presence UN-lawful in some way? We know that the Law of Death was broken by Elena in millenia past, and that TC himself is/was dead...but what about Jeremiah?
2) Perhaps more importanly, I think it suggests that Linden has her own paradox. Recall that the Mhoram discovered that TC WAS the white gold... could Linden herself BE the Staff of Law? CFould her emotional need to control be so strong ( in conjunction with her healthsense) that it has the power to predicate the physical laws of the land?
Maybe this topic should have its own thread....?

As long as white gold isn't explained away as genetic, I think nearly any explanation will do.
Well, we know that in previous trips, Covenant was "cured" of his leprosy while in the Land. At first I was thinking that perhaps Jeremiah has been "cured" of his autism in a similar manner. But the fact that Earthpower is not nearly as strong as it once was and the fact that Jeremiah can't be near the Staff is very odd.
Perhaps Covenant used some lore to "heal" Jeremiah and, since TC is dead, perhaps that was some unlawful act? Pure guess at this point, but I'm sure all will be explained
Could it be that TC is part of the Arch and it is now fractured. So the Staff and Linden are 'to much' for his fractured being? Jerimiah might be tied to the Arch or TC in some way also?
