Yeah. The Appeal Panel she had to appear before in order to plead her case was comprised of the people making the accusation. I mean, imagine if the courts employed that system. :-x

If you can find at least four other examples, PUBLISHED, you should be able to chuck that right out the window...
That's a good plan, thanks. Now I just need to convince Hannah that she should let me do it... *sigh*

CJr, its been my experience that you won't get very far relying on a strategy that has "and then they'll admit that they were wrong" as the central element.

If you want to succeed, first get to the bottom of why it happened. Is there a teacher with a chip on their shoulder?

Plagiarism is intense in the internet age. These guys probably run software against a known database to search for repeated phrases. You should find out if that is the case. It sounds to me like it is.

Finally, you should tell Hannah that failing or bad grades is one thing; but having cheating in the college record is an altogether different problem. This will cause problems with grad schools, finding a job, etc.

And you should get a lawyer. Really.

Seriously. She can't let that remain on her record. It's a false charge and it will screw up her career. Get a solicitor now.

CJr...Elfy's suggestion is a great one! I know your gf isn't interested in pursuing it but, well...she might come around???

Me: well, after two weeks of being strung out over some health issues I'm feeling a lot better today after having tests done yesterday (I don't get the results until later in the week but I have a good feeling about it all!).

In the middle of all that chaos, I had a few ups, a few downs I'd have preferred not to have but, well...life wasn't meant to be easy, and today I'm in a "place" I'm happy to be. :)

Yeah, it was a computerised thing. Their attitude is of the all-too-common "the computer is law" variety. The computer flags it so it can be checked out by humans, but they don't bother, they just enforce the computer's 'decision'.

I completely agree with getting a lawyer. Definitely.

CJr, does the University have an Ombudsman? I've been out of college for over 20 years, and I may be wrong, but I thought that part of their role was to be approached as a mediator in situations like that.

I'd only go after them legally as a last resort. I my guess is that they'd dig in their heels if they are threatened legally, and if your GF is a non-confrontational sort, it'd be extremely difficult for her.

Humph. I'd go after the 'professors' for being lazy oiks relying on a "Computer" instead of their supposedly enlighted, wise, almighty BRAIN. Why the F**K are they being paid if they rely on a computer's judgement??? I'd report the professors to the deans for not doing their job. IF they want a computer to mark their students' work, the faculty can save a fortune each year by sacking the professors!

I feel really on edge right now. I'm very sensitive to heat and when it gets hot I get irritable. I try not too, but it's hard as hell to act it, when I'm frickin miserable.

On the other note, I love honey. ;) Speaking of SoS, his shirt should be on the way in a bit here, along with the other one, so keep your eyes on the mail box! :D

Unfortunately not. British universities are notoriously entirely self-regulating, and the 'mediators' are the people making the accusation.

Haha, yes, it is extremely lazy, but apparently common practice. At least, it's common practice to have computers flag up possible plagiarism, but the staff are then meant to check it out to see if it's something that needs dealing with. My girlfriend's dad works as a lecturer at a different university, and he thinks this whole thing is very sloppy. But the university can be sloppy if it wants to be; there's no higher power.

Bullshit, mate. Pure unmitigated hooey is what this is. I would write whatever governmental agency provides oversight to the university AND write your local representative and demand action from both.

For me, things are somewhere between stressful and hellish. We are planning a trip to FL for next week and while I got a great price on the tickets, it is still a lot of dough...but something that needs to be done. My brother as most of you know is ill w/ cancer and the future is uncertain at best. Between that fact and all else, things are not the best.

My kids and wife anre great, however, so I am OK.

Hang in there, Guns.

I'm starting to feel the stress lifting, yay! The Girl Scout recognitions ceremony for the big award earners was Sunday. I was on the planning committee and it just about drove me round the bend. But in the end, we had a lovely ceremony, and I only left two girls' names off the program. We hand out the recognitions for adult volunteers Thursday night, and then I'm DONE with this bloody committee. Hooray! Also, last night, MagickMaker finished her hours for one of the big Girl Scout awards, and I submitted that application this morning. We're getting there! Commencement is May 24th, and I'm taking a nice, long vacation starting the 25th!

I'm on day 3 of the quit of smoking.

There is a chance I will not have a job soon, as I heard a rumor today.

Hopefully that's all it is.

Blah blah.

Hang in there Cagliostro! And dont fret, what will be will be, at least, in this instance.

I feel pretty good. I have a job. My endurance is improving. All I need now is a girlfriend. :D

I'd also make mention of "FUNDING CUTS" for failure to provide adequate teaching staff... ...hit 'em in the hip pocket & you got 'em by the cahonies.

Way to go, Cagliostro - quit and stay with it...it'll be worth it when you regain your senses of taste and smell! :P

Hugs to Guns, Balon and Sea! |G

Enjoy your vacation Aliantha!
