I thought it was fun. I just got back from seeing it with Lucimay and Bloodguard Bob. It wasn't brilliant by any means but still very entertaining and some funny stuff.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

Saw it today. Too much fluff for me. I mean a shipward marriage? Come on.

At least it was free.

marriage scene made me snort

they kept saying "shut it" to shut people up.

pirates do not say "shut it".

The thing that annoyed me most was Barbossa. His character in this movie is not consistent with his past, and there is no arc to explain the change. Obviously the reason is they altered some of his core values because he's a good guy this time around... but it sucked and doesn't work. Character consistency is much more important to me than plot consistency.

Oh NO! I was pleased to see Barbosa pop up at the end of Pirates 2, because I thought he might improve number 3. If he's changed though...argh.

I'm torn between seeing it now and renting it on DVD.

We went out to see it on sunday... but it was full, so we saw Spiderman 3 instead. No one wants to pay for the cinema twice in a week, so we're watching a downloaded copy of Pirates later this evening.

I'm excited about going to see it, but I'm not expecting much. I'm just looking forward to drooling over Kiera and JD.

I was withholding my comments so as to not to pre-downer anyone who is going to see it.

Hint hint.

If you want to be pre-downered:
Spoiler
But essentially I agree with Killtyme and James. It's hard to quantify why the movie didn't work for me... but it has something to do with there being no characters in the movie. There's some people in costumes who look familiar but we have no idea what they are doing, and we don't really care too much. The only character I empathized with was Bootstrap.

Just finished watching it. Pretty good. While I think the second film was more entertaining in terms of the action scenes etc, I think this one worked just as well.

I agree. He was the only character I enjoyed.

I agree with BB. The movie is not supposed to be deep and meaningful. It's supposed to capture your attention and entertain you with the special effects etc. It delivered. Dummy up and watch and you will be rewarded. It's not like anyone expected profound revelations from something titled "dodgeball" Pirates ia an adventure with super special effects and silliness. If you go into it with that mind set you will love it!

I dunno. The First and second had some (at least to me) really good plot ideas. For me the fact that it had AMAZING CGI and fight scences added to the movie. But it wasn't the movie itself.

Which is the exact opposite for this movie. It revolved around CGI and very little or no plot. And I am a plot man.

Well, it finished the original story and left some sequels open.

That it did.

Although it seemed like there were almost to many threads to tie up in this flick.

But the fourth should be interesting. I'm looking forward to it.

Agreed.

The thing I loved about Pirates 1 was the fact that it was basically an old-fashioned adventure movie, of a kind that has all but disappeared. Pirates 1 would have worked perfectly well without the special effects; Pirates 2...less so. The second film seemed more self-conscious and more forced - less fun adventure, more shallow posturing.

Since I expect 3 to be in the same vein as 2, I suspect I'll find the whole experience mildly irritating.

The more I think about the film, the better I like it.
Spoiler
What other film could pull off a undead monkey sailing through the air on fire after being shot out of a cannon?
Plot be damned!
