media player problems.

please help! no sound is coming from our media player. i have downloaded another media player, no luck. this is what i get,

Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly.

have tried to install the recommended device, no luck. please help!

Are you getting any sound from anything else on Windows? Like, a Youtube video, or your startup music?

no. youtube is silent as well.

I think your speakers are broken then. If you're getting no sound at all, that's the only logical conclusion.

If it was the speakers, Windows wouldn't notice. More likely sound card or driver issues.

I'd agree with that.

Try plugging in headphones to eliminate the speaker theory - if it's the speakers, then you'll get sound in the headphones.

Then I'd try reinstalling the drivers for your sound card.

No, if it was just broken speakers there would just be no sound.
Windows is telling him that there's a problem.

Sarge, I'll just assume you have Windows XP and rather than asking a whole bunch of questions why don't you do a system restore to the day when it last worked.

Null- Before you try rolling your system back with the restore, take a look at the components anyway--go into Control Panel, find Sound and Audio Devices, click the Hardware tab and look at the list there: if you see a little warning symbol next to one of them, then that's what's not working. Check the properties for that device, on the first tab there should be an option "Device usage", set to "Use this device (enable)"; if that's alright, go to the drivers tab and try either Update Driver or (eg if there are no updates) Roll Back Driver.
