Oh criminey...

Post by Menolly »

I just nearly set the house on fire...

I am reheating some leftover linguine in arrabiatta sauce with roasted garlic cloves, sundried tomatoes, and artichoke hearts from Macaroni Grill's create your own pasta. Following their directions on the foil lined cardboard lid of the to go container, I removed the lid and added a small amount of hot water. The directions said nothing regarding putting the lid back on or not, so I did and stuck the container in the toaster oven at 375ºF and set the timer for 12 mintues per the instructions.

I then came back here to the laptop...

Six minutes later, I find myself just beginning to smell something acrid and clearing my throat. I go to the kitchen, and while there is no smoke, the lid to the container is turning black. I remove it, and the foil lining on the lid is all blistered.

Ah, cooking accidents.

I've had a few disasters with my Belgian waffle iron (through no fault of its own). I had omitted spraying the griddles with non-stick spray, which resulted in split-in-half waffles. Still, good though. Hmm, now there's an idea for future pyramid schemes: waffle sandwiches!

Also: tin foil and microwaves don't like each other.

We have a kitchen with limited counter space. Combine that with a couple of disorganized humans and one flat-glass electric cooktop that has a very small 'hot' LED, and you end up with all kinds of interesting slagged / scorched / flaming objects: grocery bags, Tupperware, wooden utensils, plastic utensils, straws, bread bags, cereal boxes, medicine bottles, pet toothbrushes... you get the idea.

I regularly burn myself with steam from the kettle or the pressure cooker , and get spattered with hot oil when I fry things (nothing that's scarred so far  )

I also melt plastic bags on the range top all the time. Turn the stove on the next day and wonder why the smoke detector goes off.

I once put some sausages on the stove and fell asleep. I aoke to the sound of the fire alarm, and a house filled with smoke. A close call indeed. Gubs nearly killed by Bratwurst. Lord I'm macho.

You should see me try to make pinto beans (by myself, no Tam around)-tried 3 times in my life always the same results: after about 4 hours I forget the stove's on and have to throw out the pot the next day when the smoke tells me to.

I wandered in here because I thought this was a thread about which mushrooms are the best to stuff.

My favorite all time cooking accident is taking the pyrex baking dish, filled with something along the lines of, say, tuna casserole, out of the oven and putting it on top of the stove ... on a hot electric burner.

A few minutes later - kaboom.

Not only is there tuna/whatever all over the kitchen. But the thousands of tiny pieces of glass are each hot enough to melt little holes the linoleum floor.

We did that twice.

Yep. Twice.

Oh Wayfriend. I've only done that once to a glass Pyrex mixing bowl (yeah, one of the collectible ones nowadays). Cleaning those glass fragments up is no fun at all...

But, I do believe this is your first post here in the Galley, isn't it? Welcome!! Please stick around.

APPARENTLY, you're not supposed to put a potato in the microwave for anywhere close to 20 minutes, expecting to check on it after a while, but then taking a shower and losing track of time .
APPARENTLY, the water in the potato evaporates and the "potato" becomes an energetic mass of room filling carbon soot that literally needs to be washed off the walls and ceiling.
And APPARENTLY the stench from it never quite goes away for good.

But, this is all hearsay.
Since it never happened to me. :hairs:

I'm seeing a trend here - I did that once too with a Pyrex dish. Fortunately it did not actually explode, just cracked in half rather spectacularly. I see now that I was VERY lucky! 8O

my bird likes to explore when he has his wings. he used to like to get under the stove top to chew up the bits and crumbs. the VERY last time he did it he got himself covered in grease and burned all his tail feathers off.
