Ok.....I struggled through Gardens Of The Moon (which I started when I was really tired and that may have been a mistake!), am now about a third of the way through Deadhouse Gates. I just can't go on........ :| :Z:

I'm still trying. It is getting a little better. Now that pool season is over, I don't spend as much time lounging around with a book, so my reading is going slower. It's pathetic, really, I've been reading this book for 4 months now and I'm just halfway through. The book itself looks horrible. It's missing the cover. It's all "poofy" from getting wet too many times. And smells like sunblock. Okay, I made that last one up. I miss the pool.

That's okay.....I woulda thunk I'd really like it too! As I said before, I was really tired when I started it so maybe in a few months I'll try again.

I picked up Deadhouse Gates last week and I'm at I think Chapter 7. I love the story and now that I'm getting used to all the new characters I'm growing to like them too. Still, I think it's going to be a series that needs a re-read when I finish it. There's far too much to take in in one go.

Well, I've heard some stuff about this series that sounds pretty intriguing, so I bought the first two today. (It took quite a bit of doing to get my hands on Gardens! Freakin' B&N and Borders were both out, and it doesn't look like they can get more. The local bookstore (Where I just bought some hardcover copies of the Gap books. I got them in case anybody wants them, so let me know if you do.) didn't have it. Finally, the local B&N found that one less than an hour away had one, and I picked it up today.

So maybe I'll be able to contribute to this forum soon. (I'm not promising anything specific regarding "soon." I'm not a fast reader, and it's a big book. But we'll see what I can do. :D)

Well, I'm past page 100, and have almost no idea what's going on. The reason I stopped reading ASOIAF is that the main thrust of it is court intrigue. Who's maneuvering for the throne, who's allied with whom, who has the best chance, etc. This type of thing also seems to be a huge part of Malazan. And it usually loses me pretty quickly. OK, I can understand that this person did this, and this other person did that. (Although I don't remember a lot of it a few pages later. "Huh? Is that the guy who lead the Emperor's forces, or the guy who...?") But I have no idea why anybody did anything they did. (The main reason I stay out of the Tank is because I just can't follow politics.)

However, Malazan has MUCH more of the cool fantasy elements than ASOIAF. I mean, it's filled with it! So I'm entirely willing to keep reading. It may be reading at a superficial level, at least with regard to the politics, but there's plenty of other stuff of great interest. It looks as though the magic is pretty damned complex! It's not the one-dimensional type of magic seen so often. (Xanth, for example. Fun books, to be sure, but just fluff. I didn't read Eragon, but if the movie is any indication, it's another good example of depthless magic.)

And who knows, maybe the other stuff will hammer its way into my brain eventually.

Okay, I've been subscribed to this forum for a couple of months and can't believed I've not posted to this topic.

SE totally rocks. so much so I have the 3 B&KB novellas and even ICE's NoK as well as the MBotF novels.

I started with LOTR as the best, then SRD(though Gap made him No 1 in my eyes) and now Malazan............

Just started on Reaper's Gale, and the first dialogue with Tehol and Bugg just had me going.

This series outstrips anything I have read previously(GotM as an exception).

Therefore, I stand by all that Luci has said......SE is now my No 1(I'll get my coat :) ).

Yesss... TEHOL and BUGG. At this point I think my copy of Reaper's Gale is gonna arrive before Night of Knives. While I am looking forward to NoK, I need a good Tehol and Bugg fix. (If that makes me sound like an Erikson addict, it's probably because I am. :P )

Does anyone else think there's a bit of a homo-erotic thread running through the series? Most of his male character descriptions resemble those blokes you get on the covers of cheap romantic novels! :P :P :P

It's literary beefcake, not homo-erotic. :P

Alright, the MT cover is pretty homo-erotic. That guy on the right (trull?) is gripping his spear rather firmly.

Pfftt. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Ok, Mappo and Icarium. 2 strapping single blokes, in the prime of life (which is not hard when your practically immortal), muscles on top of muscles, long flowing, well groomed, hair, probably dressed in little more than loincloths, travelling together without the slightest mention of sexual contact with any females.

Explain, cos it seems pretty obvious what's going on to me. Oh yeah, I forgot, they're just friends. ;)
