World Fantasy Convention?

Post by starkllr »

The World Fantasy Convention is taking place here in Washington, DC this weekend, and SRD is scheduled to be there.

He's scheduled for a reading on Saturday from 11:30 to Noon, and then also on a panel from 10 AM until 11 AM on Sunday:

Darkened Characters

Are the characters in horror fantasy different than characters in other modes of fantasy? Must certain characteristics have been honed or suppressed in the protagonists or antagonists for the stories to have worked?

The fee for the whole convention is $180, and they're not offering one-day memberships, so I can't go (as much as I want to, I can't justify $180 just for 1/2 hour of SRD reading, as sorely tempting as it is).

Is anyone from the Watch going to be there? If so, please please please post a report afterwards!

Is SRD on that panel? He'd def have something to say in that regard. Sorry wish I could but it's a distance/job/budget thing. 180 dollars is way too much! For anything-even a frickin' Stones concert...8O

Starkllr,

Look for me at the con - this is my eight one. I'm 6'2", thin, short brown hair (well, still mostly brown), and usually wear a sports jacket and tie (blue on Friday, brown on Saturday, suit on Sunday for the banquet). If I'm not in the panels, I'm usually hanging out in the hotel bar. I'll buy you a drink. :-)

Aliantha is in the area as well, but she won't be able to make the con. :-(

I second (or third) the above Romeo - come back with a good write-up of SRD's reading, and you'll be a hero (just like Danlo in the "thread that sets SRD fandom on fire" thread.)

Too bad it's so much. I'd go, otherwise.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Starkllr, were you at the reading today (well, "yesterday")? I was at the front left (if you were in the audiance facing the front).

Everyone else... I'll put together a more comprehensive post in a day or two. Just got back from the con, and it's 2am. Need to get a couple hours sleep before heading back over tomorrow. SRD's panel is at 10am (and a friend of mine - Carol Berg - is moderating that panel), and I need to have a few winks so I can be a bit coherent for it.

:-)

Nothing really new. Steve said he still doesn't have a publisher, so doesn't know when it will be out yet. He read from the Prologue, chapter 5 (Linden goes home from Berenford Memorial Psychiatric to find that her adopted son was taken by Roger, and goes to Haven Farm to get him back). It was only a half hour reading instead of the normal hour long one - probably not much different than what was previously reported.

He did introduce the book as "Runes of the Earth", which helps answer the question that was raised before regarding the title "The Broken Sky". I'll see if I can get more info on it tomorrow.

Cheers,
John

No, I didn't end up making it. I wanted to, but...

I can't wait to hear any more info you might learn today in the panel with SRD...

Sorry for the delay - I was entertaining guests until this morning, and just got around to getting ready for this post.

I uploaded a jpeg pic from SRD's reading onto the Member Gallery board.

And here's a link to a VIDEO that you should find interesting:

www.eccker.org/SRD_WFC2003.avi

RIGHT-click on the link above, and select "save target as" or "save to disk" - or whatever is closest to that wording - to download the file to your hard drive. It probably won't display correctly in your browser if you just left-click on it.

(I tried to post this file on the member pics board, but it was too large and/or the wrong file type - so I uploaded it to my own web space.)

======

The chapter that Steve read was from the Runes prologue, chapter 5. This is the same one he read from at the previous con, so there wasn't really any new info. Linden rushes home from the hospital after Megan tells her that she mentioned to Roger earlier that Linden had a son. Linden gets home to find all the lights on, and her son (and his babysitter) gone. Roger now has Joan, Linden's son (Jeremiah), and two hostages - Amy Clint (a nurse from the hospital) and Sandy Eastwall (Jeremiah's babysitter). Linden pulls herself together - leaves behind the person she had settled into during the intervening years, and again becomes Linden Avery the Chosen. She changes into jeans and a flannel shirt, hiking boots, and heads off in her car toward Haven Farm (after leaving a message for the sheriff that she believes Roger to be there).

Steve only read for half an hour, so he ran out of time just as Linden got to the front door of Haven Farm. Roger's car was there, doors shut but trunk open (he must have had something or someone in there). A storm is gathering the whole time - a rather unnatural one. She takes a heavy flashlight and her medical bag and enters the house...

========

Some more info. I asked Steve about the cover art for the SF Book Club reprints of the second chronicles (where Covenant is holding up what I guess is "The One Plate" - stolen from the china collection of Berek's queen). He rolled his eyes - clearly he had no clue either. He said that generally artists are provided a synopsis of the book, along with a circled portion of what they should draw a picture of. (and things are rarely coordinated with the author)

He went on to explain that he was never very happy with the cover art of the first six books. Good stories follow...

Lester DelRey changed the story of The Wounded Land to match the cover art that Darrel Sweet drew. Particularly, Covenant was NOT wearing a robe in the original text. So to make the text match the picture, they had the Haruchai throw a robe over Covenant's shoulders before that "scene", and later he shrugged it off.

After The One Tree hit the best sellers list, Steve had some clout. He said that when he saw the original art for White Gold Wielder (which is not what we see on the book), he laughed ... then he nearly cried. The scene depicted was in the Hall of Gifts, but the characters in it were a bit ... ummm.... off. I believe he said that the art showed "Queen Elizabeth, the Hunchback of Notre Dame, a rhinocerous, and two hawkmen." He put his foot down, and was able to get it changed to something that might actually look like it is from the book.

Laugh out loud fun. :-)

No publisher yet. His big goal for the con was to get that process started. But until he has a publisher, he won't be able to guess at a release date. So the one we currently have is as good as any other may be.

Another interesting incident... About halfway through his reading, just as he was thick into words about the Despiser and the unnatural storm that was tossing Linden's car around, his cell phone rang - and had a melodic tone like something from a carosel. It was a bit amusing, but I think if he had a hammer, he'd no longer have a phone. :-)

Be true...

Please don't remove the video clip until later as I am at work and can't download it here but will want to about midnight tonight when I am home! (eg look at the time this post was posted and add 14 hours and 17 minutes to it, and leave it up until just after then :) )

I think its digusting of SRD to be so discriminatory as to go to a convention of talk to people in the states and yet not come over here and take me down to my local pub and have a chat over 30 pots of carlton draught.

rules for some :P

WOW!!! 8O 8O

Thank you so much for the synopsis Romeo!! And that video is awesome!! I had a hard time making out what he was saying, I assume he is talking about bringing back Covenant?? I'll have to listen to it closer, try to filter out some of that background noise.

I love what he said about the cover art!! Seems like I'm not the only one that finds it silly sometimes. And Del Rey changing the story to FIT the cover of TWL is just flat out grrrrrrrrrrrrrr'some :-x

Did he say he was done with the first draft of Runes? He seems to be actively looking for a publisher now...

Thanks again, John!! :) :) :)

From what I can tell he said "Ummm...... I'm not making any promises, but I'm thinking about bringing back Damelon Giantfriend. That'd be fun."

8O 8O 8O :D :D :D :D :D

Caveat:
I had to listen to it 4 times to decide that's what he said, and I could be wrong. But.... :D

Just listened to it again and I'm pretty darn sure. He pronounces it Daymelahn, with the emphasis on "ahn", which is what threw me for a bit. ;)
