Yes, there was something magically different about the 16-oz glass bottled Cokes and Pepsis - I'd even drink a Pepsi if it were in such a glass bottle. Otherwise, blech!!
I think it might have something to do with the trace amounts of detergent left over from previous uses... or that in the old days when they used glass bottles, they were still using cane sugar.
Coke Light in France (and assuming the rest Europe) is half sugar, half aspartame - and quite good, as I recall.
Has anyone else seen the recent study that says diet sodas may be just as bad for your health as regular ones? I'm not surprised, but I'm also not entirely convinced, either.

Aspartame is not good for you.Has anyone else seen the recent study that says diet sodas may be just as bad for your health as regular ones? I'm not surprised, but I'm also not entirely convinced, either.
Granted sugar isn't either...and glutcose/frutcose isn't either.
But Aspartame is the worst of the three.
If you like pop; but don't want the sugar....bite the bullet and don't drink the pop...save yourelf from poisoning yourself.

Cail, given that I live in the middle of SF's Mission District, I can walk out my door and in half a block in any direction find a store that sells Mexican Coke. I'd be happy to mail you a couple glass bottle of it if you want.
Now if I could just find a way to wear live bees as jewelry all the time.....

Re: Aspartame...wefirst, I can see no reason that the world needs artificial swweteners...there are plenty of natural sweteners around.
Here's a little link with some details:

And regarding the FDA and aspartame...here's an interesting link:

I may take you up on that if I can't find it locally. We've got a relatively large Hispanic population here, so I may have a shot.Cameraman Jenn wrote:Cail, given that I live in the middle of SF's Mission District, I can walk out my door and in half a block in any direction find a store that sells Mexican Coke. It is that time of year!!
My local Albertson's that caters to the "Kosher for Passover" crowd has the 2-litre "Kosher for Passover" Coke, even though Passover is a month away.
As I said earlier in this thread, since corn is not an allowed food for Ashkenasim on Passover, "Kosher for Passover" Coke is made with cane sugar instead of corn syrup. It's not the glass bottle Coke with cane sugar, but it is a definite improvement.
My Albertson's has the K4P Coke in a totally different display then the regular sodas, but you will know it as it has a yellow cap on the 2-litre bottle instead of a red or black one. There is also printing on the cap that says something like O-UP.
This does not apply to the Coke with Lemon. That has a yellow cap year round.
I am awaiting a 99 cents/bottle sale. Then we'll easily buy at least a case of them. I don't buy soda at all, except for this time of year. It will keep.
...well...except for the occasional glass bottle of Mexican coke...
But never for the house.

...oh, and for those who do prefer Pepsi, I think they also do a K4P Pepsi with cane sugar. But I don't know how they signify that it is K4P. Probably also by a different cap...

Hmm, must look for this. Thanks for the heads-up, Menolly! (And if it's nearly Passover, then it's just about time for my annual box of matzoh! Whoo hoo!)

I don't drink soda with sugar in it. . . I've got a bit of a diet pepsi habit. However, I will drink diet coke--though preferably not out of aluminum cans. Yuk! I found that diet pepsi tastes consistently better out of fountains, which is why I head for it. And strangely, I never, ever buy soda to keep at the house. If I want a soda, I will buy a fountain drink from the nearby gas station. The staff knows me there, and always gives me my drink for half off.Menolly wrote:It is that time of year!!

now how Authentic was this coca-cola? not so far as to have actual cocaine in it like the old days though right? hehe I wonder how many kids got their hands on that version of Coke when it first came out......
I used to smoke Mexican Marlboro's because they were only 50 cents a pack 10-15 years ago that is. and all the writing was in spanish...used to trip my friends out when they would bum a smoke off me too.

really??? that is great....it seems a better option than having to risk TJ for a soda too..... wow...they actually have a Kosher bottle of Coke.. hehe I need to tell my boss about that she will be happy to know that.Menolly wrote:While not as nostalgic as the glass bottled packaged Mexican Cokes, this is why I stock up on the Kosher for Passover 2 liter bottles of Coca-Cola every year. It is in the same packaging, including the lable. The only difference you can see is that it has a yellow cap instead of a red or black one that is usually on the 2 liters, and on the top of the cap is the words Kosher for Passover and some sort of rabbinical hehsher. For Jews of Ashkenazi descent, any corn product is not allowed for Passover, so the K4P Coke is also manufactured with cane sugar only, although the lable says otherwise.
I recently found the bottles of Mexican Coke in a small bodega here in Gator Town. We are awaiting our first Wal-Mart Super Center. I much prefer the Mexican Hellman's mayonnaise with lime instead of lemon that Wal-Mart sells in communities with a good sized Mexican population. I hope when our SuperCenter opens that I'll be able to find both products in their ethnic foods section.
