Seems like Wayfriend and Creator have pretty much moved on from this thread now. Maybe we can all move on?

Prebe wrote:No matter how many books, tapes etc. you are going to buy, you are still -according to principles of the free market - part of the the 'demand'. This eventually results in person A NOT buying FR in hardback, because he has already been ripped off at e-bay by some "crazy collectors" who jacked the price up. So yes, you ARE costing SRD money, like it or not.
Let me see if I get this right: if I didn't try to buy it, I would not have increased the demand for the ARC, and then someone who did buy it (somehow without increasing the demand, I presume?) could have afforded to by a retail copy as well, thereby preventing the author of being deprived of their royalty.

Isn't that a little abstruse? How is it people are buying ARCs in ways that don't drive up the demand? Apparently that's where I went wrong.

And how do I become responsible for other peoples choosing to spend too much?

On the other hand, I took an ARC off the market (at my expense) that no one will ever read. (Honestly, I bought it as a collectable, and I won't even break the binding.) And in doing so hasn't cost the author a dime. (And believe me, if I saw where I was, I wouldn't have in the first place.)

Sorry, prebe, but I have to say that, weighing one against the other, I'm doing SRD a lot more tangible good than harm.

Note: I never intended to announce I ever tried to get one of these damned things. To avoid exactly this kind of specious criticism. So I thank whoever decided to share my e-bay escapades with you all in the first place -- more misery for me, yum.

Hm, yes. I think it's time to lock.

I hope people have learned something, though. It's just a book. The last thing in the world people should get worked up over. We're all SRD fans here.-jay
