Favorite ALTERNATE Star Trek starship commander.

Post by aTOMiC »

There have been quite a few exceptional actors portraying starship captains on Star Trek that in my mind would have been terrific lead characters with a show of their own. I scanned my memory for a few of them and came up with these 7. If you happen to think of any others by all means let us all know. I did not include featured characters such as Riker taking command of the Enterprise or Scotty or Kyle. I happen to think Kelsey Grammer’s Captain Bateson would have been pretty cool or the possibility of “Star Trek: Excelsior” featuring George Takei as Captain Sulu instead of “Enterprise”. I like Paul Winfield’s Captain Terrel the best. He was terrific in Star Trek II.

Here is the list of ALTERNATE starship commanders.
(Sorry, I don't know all of the actors names.)

Captain Morgan Bateson of the U.S.S. Bozeman (Kelsey Grammer)
Captain Ron Tracey, of the Starship Exeter (Morgan Woodward)
Captain Rudolph Ransom of the U.S.S. Equinox
Captain Clark Terrel of the U.S.S. Reliant (Paul Winfield)
Commodore Matt Decker of the U.S.S. Constellation (William Windom)
Captain Rachel Garret of the U.S.S. Enterprise C
Captain Hikaru Sulu of the U.S.S. Excelsior (George Takei)
Captain Edward Jellico TDY U.S.S. Enterprise (Ronny Cox)
Captain John Harriman of the U.S.S. Enterprise B
Commodore Robert Wesley of the U.S.S. Lexington
and of course the legendary Captain Garth of Izar

What about Captain Edward Jellico, who commanded the Enterprise while Picard was on an away-mission inside Cardassian space? He took no crap from nobody, and actually made use of Riker's legendary shuttlecraft piloting skills.

I liked the captian from "Yesterday's Enterprise"...I can't remember her name tho...
And I believe in you
altho you never asked me too
I will remember you
and what life put you thru.

I've always thought that Star Trek would have been just fine with Jeffery Hunter in the lead. At least we have the first pilot as a terrific example.

I missed Captain John Harriman who commanded the Enterprise B at the beginning of Star Trek Generations. Not the most commanding figure in all of Star Trek.
And of course my all time favorite - worst starship commander Captain J.T. Esteban U.S.S. Grissom of Star Trek III the Search for Spock. Ugh.:-)

Ididn't mean to leave Sisko out. He's a mainline character and I consider him a terrific captain but he was featured on his own show like Kirk, Picard, Janeway and Archer. :D

Thats okay Mist. I have forgotten a few more captains. Commodore Robert Wesley of the U.S.S. Lexington and of course the legendary Captain Garth of Izar who commanded a mental institution. :-)

Was he the guy who everybody hated, but who finally made Troi wear a uniform? If so, he's at least worth some credit for that. :)

I think Dekker is great. The Doomsday Machine is one of my favorite episodes bar none. "Matt, there is no fourth planet." "Don't you think I know that? There was but not any more!" Dekker losing it and then taking command and turning into Captain Queeg is priceless, but instead of ball bearings he sits and fidgets with two data disks. :-)

Other Captains

Post by Zahir »

Well, there's also the Vulcan Captain of the Saratoga during the battle of Wolf 359.

And Georgie's mother, Captain of the Zeus if memory serves.

Captain Rixx, the Bolian, whose ship I can't recall right now (it was the episode with the alien parasites taking over starfleet).

I myself like to think Saavik eventually won her own captaincy. :D

Captain Ben Maxwell of the Phoenix, before he went mad

The vulcan Captain and crew of the Intrepid before they were lost.

Zahir, great comments and way to come up with several captains that I'd missed. Here is the one I had been asking about. Donald Varley of the U.S.S. Yamato
