Another Casting Thread (Nick)

THE ROLES ARE GREAT FOR ACTORS AND WILL ATTRACT TOP TALENT. WHAT ARE YOUR IDEAS FOR THE LEAD ROLES OF ANGUS, MORN AND NICK?

What are the essential elements of Nick's character, and who should play him?

He must be gorgeous. He must be suave and self-confident. And in the end he must be broken and vulnerable (read - he must be able to act a full range of emotions.)

So I submit:
Johnny Depp (whos name has been offered extensively in other threads)
Brad Pitt

Nick is a pirate; he has rugged charm and dangerous moods. He also must have a physical presence that persuades the more thuggish in his crew. I like Depp, but prefer someone with some size.

He also need to be an arrogant SOB who makes you want to knock the smirk off his face the hard way. Which is why my best pick is Tom Cruise. I always want to knock the arrogant smirk off his face ...

I like Clive Owen, but I think he might be a bit old. Mel Gibson would've been perfect 20 years ago. Gerald Butler with the look he had in Timeline and Reign of Fire would work as well.

He is like five feet tall:) Hardly the size of s buccaneer like Nick.
Wouldn't he be closer to death than eighty I would say Alain Delon. But hey, I seem to live in the past.

But being 5' would make it easy to make him look small and insignificant when he meets his end. I like the idea of Tom more and more.

Not to mention that Cruise would bring at least some star power.

Jason Isaacs. Take his role in the Patriot and add a bit of suaveness and subtlety.

It's got to be Josh Halloway. He is Nick.

Tom Cruise and Johnny Depp are horrible choices. Depp is a walking cartoon. I can't stand him. Cruise is simply too . . . Cruise. Don't get me wrong, I like him in everything that he's been in, but I don't want to associate my favorite Donaldson books with Tom Freakin Cruise. But then again, his performance in Interview with a Vampire was surprisingly good . . . maybe my dislike in this instance is just because he's so recognizable. I always think of him as Tom, not the character he's playing.

Brad Pitt is another too easily recognizable face. But he certainly can play quirky, intense characters (Tyler Durden, Fight Club).

Have any of these guys ever successfully played an unlikable character? Halloway's Sawyer certainly walks that line between asshole and likable.

I think Holloway could do perfectly well as a Nick who is all together and in control. I really doubt, though, that he could convincingly portray a Nick who is falling to pieces--as he is through the greater part of the series. I've not seen evidence that he has the acting range for it.

Have you seen every episode of Lost? Come on! He can go from likable southern charmer to badass killer in a heartbeat. As for "falling apart," it's not like Nick had a lot of crying scenes in the book. He was angry and out of control. I think Halloway could do angry just fine. It's the out of control part that I haven't seen him do. But he certainly has had his moments where his cons have fallen apart, or people have bested him, or he doubts his own actions. That scene where he fails to tell Jack that he met his father in a bar and that his father was proud of him--that sick look of disgust, coupled with a very grudging respect with a touch of envy . . . yes, he's got the range.

I think people are focusing too much on his looks. If you're good at what you do nobody cares what you look like. And Nick is very good because he's charasmatic, ruthless and tough. Not just the facade of toughness...actually tough. Josh Holloway looks soft and plays soft. Sure there's that slight meaness behined the eyes, but it's the meaness my 2 year old has when you take away his favourite toy. I don't find him intimidating at all.

Admittedly, finding actors who can play those sorts of characters is not easy. I've seen the likes of Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise try and butch up for roles and it's not pretty--or rather, it's still far too pretty. A young Tom Berenger or Micky Rourke (when they still had their looks) would be my bet. Failing that, maybe Shaun Penn could pull it off.
It'd take you a long time to blow up or shoot all the sheep in this country, but one diseased banana...could kill 'em all.

I didn't even know sheep ate bananas.

That last is a good point.

Holloway would be okay, but no 5'6" actors who "act" bigger. Nick should be much taller than Angus. For that matter, Morn should be too, which definitely leaves Cruise out. Unless you want to use LOTR camera tricks.

Also, casting a star like Cruise wouldn't happen because Nick ain't around for the end.

I still like Owen for the part. The age of Nick and Angus are a little vague in the book, so a 40ish actor playing a little younger would not be out of line.

Another face just occured to me; Ed Quinn. Sci Fi show Eureka, character Nathan Stark. I've not seen him in anything else, so I don't know anything about his acting--except what he's done on Eureka--but he's got the look.

I see Nick as none other than...Nicholas Cage.

He can do cocky and he has the range to be broken and vulnerable, suave and charming, and ruthless and deadly.

I also heard his voice in my head and pictured him doing his "crazy" grin with the delivery of all of Nick Succorso's lines, from the deadliest to the most deadpan.

I could see Cage as Nick. Although could you give me something to watch that portrays the ruthlessness? I haven't seen MUCH of Cage's stuff, so I have trouble picturing it.

He is quite ruthless in the movie Face/Off (which is reaching back a ways) where he and John Travolta trade the role of villain.

He was much more disturbing in the villain role than John was, IIRC.
