The Na-Mhormam's Grim

Post by emotional leper »

This might have been touched on elsewhere.

Has anyone noticed a huge similarity between the Na-Mhoram's Grim and the way the One Tree defends itself?

As much as Donaldson likes to say that the 2nd chronicles has nothing whatsoever to say about polution in the real world...its hard to ignore some of the sililarities.

The sunbane being air polution, and the Grim (and the One Tree's defence) being something akin to acid rain.

Donaldson does admit however, that he can't controll what sneeks into his subconcious

What I noticed was that the Grim and the One Tree's Defense Mechanic are almost the exact same thing. Isn't the Sunbane a corruption of the Earthpower? It seems to me that the Grim is a pale echo of the One Tree's world-ending ability.

I don't see it.
The Grim to me was an explosion from above of slow falling rain or black snow.

The One Tree was like a spinning gyroscope.

The falling stars and the snowflakes had a similar effect.

I see what you mean but they are too different in my eyes to be linked any closer than the First's sword to the Krill.
(In that they are both swords that cut and kill.)

The Raver created storm in the area before Doom's Retreat in Illearth War (sorry the books are not close by right now) could be simliar to Sandgorgon's Doom too if you try.
(They are both tornado like manifestations of power)

I was thinking more along the lines that the Grim seemed to be a neutered, much weakened version of the One Tree's defense.

Since the Sunbane is a corruption of Earthpower, and the Grim is raised via the Sunbane, as an act of corrupted sunpower, it seems to me that the Grim is almost a corrupted, weakened version of the One Tree's defense mechanism.

Well, I always wondered why didn't Gibbon just make the Grim fall down flat in one piece instead of creating that snowfall... would be much more effective... but of course then there would be no story:)

I've noticed the similarity between the Grim and the One Tree's defense, too. There may in fact be a relationship based on Earthpower.

Or perhaps it's merely a case of an auther inadvertantly using similar devices without intending a connection. But I don't think so - SRD is too smart to make that mistake.

My opinion is that they are intended to be foils of each other; one black, one white, but otherwise the same. Corruption and Purity. One to be avoided, one of utmost necessity.

I also think that the similarity of the One Tree's defenses to stars, who are associated with Elohim and the Earth's creation, also has meaning.

I am actually re-reading the part of TWL where they escape Revelstone and the Grim is sent after them. I didn't consciously make the connection but I did find myself getting confused as to whether this was the part where Vain's arm and leg got turned to wood!
