The Seattle Signing

Post by Ard Rhys »

Hi All,

To those I talked to at the Seattle/Bellevue signing tonight, just wanted to say it was nice talking to you before the event. It was pretty damn fun. I just wish my recording went longer than six minutes -- at least I got him explaining why it takes him three years to write a book. *grins*

Anyway, howdy!

And it was great talking to Stephen's son too -- cool guy.

Hi Ard!

Sorry we didn't get much chance to talk. I did think our complementary questions about covers and titles made for good discussion points, though. How did the video come out? Or rather, why only 6 minutes?

Only six minutes because computers suck more often than not. *grins*

To be honest, I don't know why sometimes it will record only six minutes and other times it will record and hour 1/2. It makes no sense. Might be a power issue -- plugged in as opposed to working off of the battery.

At any rate, now that I've looked at those first six minutes, they only have Stephen talking about why he didn't want to read from Fatal Revenant and about 7/8 of him reading Chapter One of The Real Story. So, super annoying that it didn't work and I should have paid better attention to the video.

I've wanted to know about the titles for some time, and I guess I just missed him talking about the original titles for those first six Covenant books on the Ongoing Interview. Time to go searching, I guess.

But overall, people had some great questions last night -- I was especially interested in the "darkness/happy" question where Stephen essentially said it wasn't the real Stephen standing before us but one of his characters. I'd love to see the real Stephen R. Donaldson, even though I might not like it.

Again, cool event.

It was rad meeting you all. It was a good showing. Lot more people than I expected. It's really too bad that video got cut off at 6 minutes, but at least I was there to hear it :)

Since he said he was a character instead of himself, could you say if he was any different than when he was at e'Fest, Wadds?

That's hard to say. He did seem a little more... almost cheerful last night, and a little more "real" (not the word I want to use) at E-fest, but that could have just been the nature of the more personable setting.

Oh! He DID say that he'd do as many as one E-fest per year, because I asked him :)

He read from TRS instead of FR? I would've been PISSED.

Did he remember you, Wadds?

He didn't want to read from FR because of spoilers. He was going to let us choose by show if hands whether or not to have him read. When it looked like we were going to let him off the hook, I suggested he read from TRS as a compromise. Ard Rhys has a video of him explaining that.

Yeah, I think he recognized me. Was worried because I've dyed my hair since then, but he did remember. And I talked to his son about a friend of his that I'd talked to online once, and he asked if I "have the tattoo." :D That was neat. I think I may have actually talked to him more this time around than I did at E-fest. I was a little less nervous.

I didn't get my back signed, ya dork :P But I did ask him how he would feel if I got at tattoo of his face under my current one with an arrow pointing to the quote and he said that'd probably get me committed in a few states.

Also, I asked him who would in a fight between Anele and the Mahdoubt. (The burning question on everyone's mind.) He laughed/scoffed as if it would be no contest but didn't give me an answer. I suppose it'll be obvious by the end of FR. ;)

I am going to post it, if for no better reason to let people hear him speak. :)

I'll get it up when I can... I promise to post here when I do.

And it's funny how he looks like him, but not really at all. I think it's his head. His head is the same shape :D

WHAT. 8O

How the hell did I miss this? Crap. Now I'm sad.

Oh well.

Guess I'll have to make up for it at the next E'fest. :)
