I just returned from Beorn's first annual IEP for high school.

I am so happy that Beorn's Learning Strategies teacher (Resource) is the ESE representative for the school for him. She and I have agreed that having Learning Strategies last period is the way to continue all through high school, and it is now officially in his IEP. His IEP also now states that his Learning Strategies teacher will help him with selecting his schedule, making sure it complies with everything needed for the Cambridge program, until he graduates.

Somehow, having the home set of textbooks had not been carried over into the IEP, she made sure it now is. He still has extended time, use of a computer or alpha-smart for writing assingments, small group testing, and frequent sensory breaks if he feels the need for one. Speech is still one time a week for 30 minutes, but we changed his goals to focusing on brain storming from essay prompts as he still will write nothing, not even a thesis, in a whole hour, if a prompt does not resonate with him.

He had been put on consult for OT. At least he wasn't fully dropped. And his Learning Strategies teacher said that the concerns I had can be addressed in Learning Strategies. Plus she said if she feels, or I feel, that Beorn backslides without OT weekly, that we will call another meeting and put it back in. So, we'll give it a go.

After the meeting I spoke with the Learning Strategies teacher. I expressed my concern about Beorn possibly being discharged completely from having an IEP, as he is doing so well academically (averaging about 94% in all of his classes so far). She told me to those who know what to look for, it is still obvious Beorn has issues and that is one concern I will never have to worry about, at least through high school.

So, I still think sending Beorn to the magnet program in our zoned school was the right choice. Even if he does pull out of the Cambridge program, he won't have to switch schools, and the IEP team will remain essentially the same. Here's to a good high school experience!!

You should really seek a second opinion. I don't want to sound like an alarmist but I saw a show the other day about that sorts of situation and it really spooked me.

If your insurance doesn't cover it, you can often negotioate a self pay rate with individual clinics. Mine gives me 25% off for paying at the time of the visit.

Good idea Jwaneeta....I don't have dental insurance but my dentist cuts me a price break since I pay out of pocket at the time of visit.

Sea: Sorry to hear about the scare again. Y'know, to maybe put you at ease, but hopefully not too much at ease that you become complacent about these things, my girlfriend and I were playing some sex trivia game last week and one of the questions was what is the percentage of lumps found on the breast that are not serious (or something like that). The answer was 75%. Still doesn't mean you shouldn't get them checked, but it also seems to imply that it shouldn't ruin your life each time you find one.

My adopted twin - Wow...I've been through the joys of a fire nearby me as well. And it was an electrical fire too. I had a bit of smoke damage, but nothing serious. The annoying thing was that it was the middle of the night, and I woke up to people stomping around, but nobody even knocked on my door. My lungs started to burn and that was when I realized there was something going on. Didn't hear a single smoke alarm. I was lucky to wake up when I did, as I suspect the smoke would have killed me. I had a pet rat at the time, and it was the middle of winter. I took the rat in the cage out, put us in the car and was going to drive us to a convenience store to call somebody, but the damn car would not start. I moved it to the other side of the lot, left the rat in there to hopefully not freeze to death (she had a bunch of bedding), and walked the 2 miles to the convenience store to call my girlfriend (but reached her parents...this was years ago). She came and picked me up and I stayed there, and wherever I could for a month so that they could clean the thing up. I even had to move to the apartment next door temporarily so they could clean it. Needless to say, I didn't stay there long after that.
Sorry to hear the fate of the cats, and I hope all is well with you and BGB. Glad your stuff is pretty much undamaged.

And just because it is on my mind...

Y'know, Cag, when milk looks like that at *my* house, I throw it out.

Sea -- I dunno how the health system there works, but, yeah, second opinion, if they'll let you get one without paying for it all on your own.

Menolly -- Beorn's grades are already better than my kids' ever were in high school. Hoping for a good high school experience for him!

And to everybody: Happy Tinker Day! Today is the fall floating holiday at my daughters' college. Classes are cancelled; they get Krispy Kreme doughnuts for breakfast; and then they all get dressed up in goofy clothes and climb Tinker Mountain. (Well, maybe not *all*. I IM'd Batty a while ago: "So, did you climb the mountain?" Her response: "F*ck no." (Except without the asterisk.) My antisocial daughter.... )

Kinda down, as my mid-term grade in Gothic Fiction is 72. I haven't had a C since freshman year, and it's the first time I've had less than an A in two years.

It's mainly because the teacher has been giving a lot of quizzes, and I'm not good at remembering plot points. I do well in traditional tests that focus on themes/concepts.

Then again, the only grades we have had are quizzes. I'm sure, once I turn in some A-quality papers and tests, that my grade will adjust. It's so weird that she's giving so many quizzes, though; she's never done that before in previous classes.

Okay, now I'm feeling awful. I was excited about seeing SRD tonight in Denver, and now I feeling awful because I just discovered it was actually LAST NIGHT that he was here.

Somebody buy me a frickin' dayplanner please. And force me to use it. At gunpoint.

At least you only let yourself down, cag! I did a similar thing when i'd organised a trip to see Ardal O'Hanlan doing stand-up, at the height of Father Dougal fame. i organised the tickets, kept hold of them in case anybody forgot them on the night, organised getting there, only to find out I had tickets for the previous night. My eight best mates were NOT impressed! I STILL get stick for that, 15 years later!

I feel much better today. I got up this morning. Chatted with Lucimay on the phone and in the process of getting ready to go to work I found myself on the verge of tears thinking that I really f'ing need a vacation. Then I thought screw it I am taking the day off to decompress after all the dramalamadingdong. I then immediately proceeded to lounge on the couch with BGB and watch a couple episodes of Firefly. Then we did a few errands and went out to lunch at a place called "Little Joe's" which was a decent Italian restaurant. BGB had some chicken livers in ragout and I had the veal marsala. Then we went to the Steinhart Aquarium and I took tons of pictures of the fishies. I am not sure how many actually turned out because I wasn't using flash cuz I didn't want to freak out the pretties. I am gonna go download them now. :P

Poor Caggy! (by the way, love your new avatar).

Jenn: good thing you had the day off. I reckon you probably needed it.

Lorelei: hope things get better for you.

And hugs for all who need them (and want them!).

As for my lumps: yeah, maybe I'll get a second opinion. I'm relaxing about it for a day or two as I really have some things I need to get done *now* and I can't do them unless I'm focused. My partner seems to think "well, it's ok so get over it" but I've got to be understanding (his brother died of cancer a couple of years ago--so he doesn't want to have to deal with that kinda sh*t again).

So I decided to spend some quality time with SoS this morning...we went to the beach and visited the rockpools. I think I got one good shot of some seaweed. I shall post later. :)

Hugs to everyone who needs em. I'm back at work today. It's pouring down rain outside. Life is back to normal.

Sea, if you are still worried then get a second opinion for sure. It can only do good. Either confirm it's nothing or catch it early, although I am SURE it will only confirm it's nothing. It's the best thing you can do for yourself.

(Say this in your best Ren imitation) Cagli you idiot! :P

Loreli, hang in there, here's a hug.

I had quite a release today. For the first time since it happened I laid all the details of my family interactions and the death of my parents out on the table. I'd sort of hinted at things or talked around some of the issues but today I just laid it all out there. And you know what??

I feel better!!

I realize that today I took the first step towards working this crap out.

Oh, tell me about it. Still, it would have been a rush to get there, as it was at 7:30 and I got off at 7:00. And if it was last night, I left work 10 minutes late, so I definitely wouldn't have got there on time. 'Twas not to be. Especially since I had the wrong night. If I had realized on Monday, I might have made it. Still, I'm sure he'll be around again, and I'll have more opportunities to see him, and hopefully some time when I won't have to speed to make it. I just wish I wasn't so stupid.

Offer him some gas-x. That might embarrass him and make him try to keep the loudness to a minimum. 8)
