Differences between US and UK editions

Post by stuartfanning »

According to Amazon, in the US and UK, the American edition has 640 pages and the British edition has 896 pages. This suggest if you want a more complete text (or an extended version) you should buy the British version. Am I correct in this assumption?

Amazon is notorious for getting page counts of unreleased books wrong, so I would take anything it says with a grain of salt. Other than spellings, there shouldn't be any textual differences between the books, but the pagecounts--due to printing differences between the editions--will probably differ (though I doubt by as much as the sites currently suggest).

When you go to the publishers sites, Gollancz/Orion the UK publisher says 800 pages - Putnam/Penguin the US publisher says 640 pages.

It's just font and typeface. In the US edition the typeface is quite small relative to the UK edition.

Can this explain a 160 page difference? If the authors 1000 page plus manuscript is edited independently by both publishers, it could be the Gollancz editor cut less!

I assure you: the editing is collaborated between US and UK publishers. The only differences between the two are spelling of certain words. The typefaces for both are significantly different. At a guess I'd say the UK is about a 12 font and the UK looks about a 10!

The Brits need a bigger font because:
The fog is thicker there.
It's harder to read by candle.
They don't want reading glasses.
They eat scones and maramite.

Now the Canucks use a flashlight.
The light reflects all around the igloos.
Great read with Moosehead by the size.

The Aussies read while fending off Roos, dingo's and toads.

The Yanks will be reading the 3 pt font with alot of pictures for translation.

j/k all
What's this silver looking ring doing on my finger?

i believe SD addressed this in the gradual interview and he did say it was a typeface/font issue. (although, he may have been referring to another book, not necessarily Fatal Revenant... read too many of the GIs so it's kind of a blur)

i don't think that it differs except in the spelling of some words (color/colour, etc) but, i can understand the concern. for a similar reason, i did purchase the british editions of harry potter.
