Really, I think she's just in denial (about whether or not she sees anything she likes in the Land, for example) and she might come around sooner or later... I can't say I really blame her for being really mad.

This is gonna sound like a cheezy, feminine thing for me to say, but.. "Just be there to listen to her and don't get all defensive about the books."

And remember, whenever she reads TIW... it might only get worse before it gets better. (imo)

Well, for some reason I can't comprehend, she doesn't like Mhoram either, so he could be her Lord Douchebag. I'm like, how can you not like Mhoram?? He's the Obi-wan Kenobi of the Land....

LD: My suggestion is to leave it alone. Maybe at one point something will niggle and she'll pick it up again on her own. You can't force it.

I've tried to get a few people into TC with some success, more than a couple of times I've had to offer some encouraging words when people get frustrated with Covenant, for example: "it's a little slow at first but trust me the build up is worth it!" or "JUST KEEP READING IT! ..or I will destroy you" seemed to work quite nicely. Ok seriously though ..threats work!

As for hating Foamfollower for befriending Covenant, wow ..it sounds like your sister might be a very "black and white" thinker. people who see things in terms of only either "good" or "bad" will definitely have trouble with TC cause, as we all know, it's all about gray areas.

I've been reasonably successful in proselytizing TCoTC - the last 3 or 4 people who've read my copies have been converted. I'm working on another co-worker now but he can't get his head out of his PS3 long enough to read.

However, I failed to convert my wife, she hated LFB with a passion and wouldn't read any further.

So is it safe to say the Chronicles aren't very popular with the fairer sex? I guess I need a find a woman that likes them and marry her lol.

If we really thought about it, the best way to turn people on to SRD would be Mordant's Need... sure, it's not as intense as TC or the Gap, and most of us don't love it quite as much, but it's still excellent. AND it also doesn't hit people over the head with one of the big things that turns them off...

Let's face it. As far as *first* novels go, LFB is extremely inaccessible. So is The Real Story for that matter. SRD is a writer who avoids all those temptations in story telling to suck you in early with a snappy opening. His storytelling is more slow and methodical. It tends to build slowly, but manages to reach epic heights later on. I don't think he writes very good beginnings honestly. However, because of the way he builds his story, he writes the best endings of any writer I have ever read. In the end, despite the lack of accessibility in the beginning, you have a richer, far more enjoyable experience.

Unfortunately, you still have to make it to Illearth War to realize how good LFB actually is

I am in the same boat really; most people I try to get into Covenant can't get past LFB. I think I might start off by giving them The Wounded Land from now on, and see how that works.

My wife loves the Chronicles as much as I do, she is a woman of exceptional good taste in more ways than one!

Actually, I brought them to her attention about 4 years ago - she disliked Covenant intensely throughout the first chronicles, but her interest in the story kept her going. I had to listen to complaints about TC every single night for some time though (

), until she started the Second Chonicles, and decided she liked Covenant a lot better.

Anyway, as far as the sister not liking Mhoram - well he is friends with Covenant too!

All of this is true, but to be honest the thing so many people can't get past isn't the slow pace or the (sometimes) labored prose, it is the rape. I have suggested the series to at least four people who wouldn't go past that scene, or were never able to get over it and quit before they reached book 3. Its a shocking thing to happen in of itself, and its made doubly so by being in a fantasy. Some (many, most) people just can't and won't accept someone who commits such vile acts as the protagonist of a genre for which they tend to have very specific expectations. Upend mythical archetypes at your peril, aspiring writers!
