~ People and Creatures of the Land ~ (SPOILERS)

Post by Krilly »

Alright, so I have this REALLY cool project I'm undertaking. The problem is... I packed away my 1st and 2nd Chronicles away in boxes (moving soon) so I have no way to begin.

Due to these circumstances I'm going to use this topic as a sort of organizational home base. I'm going to start up a list of all the major races and entities within TCTC. Further more, I want to include each entities' descriptions (straight from the pages) next to each one (or perhaps only the chapter it can be found if this is infringing on copyright). I humbly request the foremost knowledge base (you guys!) on the matter to fill in the gaps.

This topic, aside from getting my information organized, can double as a general knowledge base for anyone interested in learning (or re-learning) about a particular race in TCTC. So if you happen to know where a description can be found, please feel free to add it here!

OK, here we go, let's tackled the 1st Chronicles for now. Hope my memory serves me well (spelling wise too). Feel free to correct me, add, subtract, whatever!

First Chronicles

---Thomas Covenant---
---Stonedowners---
---Woodhelvennin---
---Ramen---
---Cavewights---
---ur-viles---
---haruchai---
---Giants---
---Lords---
---Warward---
---waynhim---
---Ranyhyn---
---The Despiser---
---Forestals---
The Forestal was a tall man with a long white beard and flowing white hair. He word a robe of purest samite, and carried a gnarled wooden rod like a scepter inn the crook of one arm,. A garland of purple white orchid about his neck only heightened his austere dignity. He appeared out of the gloaming of the Deep as if he had stepped from behind a veil, and he moved like a monarch between the trees. They nodded to him as he passed. With every step he scattered droplets of melody about him as if his whole person were drenched in song. His sparkling voice softened the severity of his mein. But his eyes were not soft. From under his thick white brows, a sliver light shone from orbs without pupils or iris, and his glances had the force of physical impact.
---kresh---
---Unfettered Ones---
---jheherrin---

Second Chronicles

---Linden---
---Coursers---
---Nicor---
---croyel---
---arghuleh---
---skest---
---sur-jheherrin---
---hustin---
---Bhrathair---
---mere-wives---
---Elohim---
---The Clave---

Sorry, I'm a stickler for spelling! :)

Also from the First Chronicles:
Wraiths of Andelain
The Ravers (samadhi, moksha, turiya)
griffins
The Colossus of the Fall (an Appointed Elohim)
the lurker of the Sarangrave
the jheherrin and their three types: assat Befylam (child-form), fael Befylam (serpent-form) and roge Befylam (Cavewight-form)

The Elohim, Sandgorgons, the Bhrathair and the Dancers of the Sea (merewives) are also mentioned in the First but just in passing.

Second Chronicles:
The Nicor
the croyel
Coursers
arghuleh
the skest
sur-jheherrin
Sunbane-warped (do they count?)

What about plant life?

By all means, stickle away! It's important everything is spelled correctly (even down to what's capitalized, and not).

I don't think I'll be focusing on plant life, lore, or objects--at least not at this point. Right now I'm interested in races and beings (if they stand alone, not as a race).

The 'Warmark' was the commander of the army--the army itself was called the Warward.

Third Chronicles: (soilers to some)
Spoiler
The Insequent
quellvisk- an extinct monster
Also forgot about the Viles and the Demondim they created.

And what about Amok? I believe he was created by Kevin using Lore. But from what? And how?
Spoiler
Could Amok be one of the Insequent?
Probably not...

Hehe, you guys are jumpin' ahead of me. Right now I want to try and get the 1st Chron out of the way, but I guess I might as well start the list for the others.

Maybe I should attempt to unpack my books (shudder). I need those descriptions.

Hey Krilly, I've got a database of all the names from the Chronicles; I've added all the various glossaries together. Would it help to have a copy of that so you don't have to unpack your books?

Keep in mind its just copied from the glossaries with little input from me; although I did elaborate a bit on some of the geographical features.

Actually, it would be great if you could PM me your omni-glossary.

However, while the glossaries are great for knowing what's what... for this project I need the detailed (well as detailed as they get) descriptions used in the actual story.

My copy of LFB is out on loan, but I can help with some of the others.

Hile Troy:
He turned and found himself (TC) confronting the warrior who had been sitting at the end of the Lords table. The man had come down to the bottom of the Close, where he faced Covenant with his hands on his hips. To Covenant's surprise, the man's eyes were covered with dark wraparound sunglasses. Behind the glasses, his head moved alertly, as if he were studying everything. He seemed to posses a secret. Without the support of his eyes, the slight smile on his lips looked private and unfathomable, like an utterance in an alien tounge.
Hile troy was sure of one thing, despite whatever covenant said, the land was no dream. He perceived this was an acuteness which made his hear ache. In the real world he had not been simply blind, he had been eyeless from birth. He lacked even the organs of sight which could have given him a conception of what vision was. Until the mysterious event which had snatched him from between opposing deaths and had dropped him on the sunlit grass of Trothgard, light and dark had been equally incomprehensible to him. He had not know that he lived in immitigabal midnight. The tools with which he had handled his physical surroundings had been hearing and touch and language. His sense of ambiance, is sensitivity to the auras of objects and the resonances of space, was translated by words untill it had become his measure of the concrete world. He had been a good stratedist precisely because his perceptions of space and interacting force was pure undistracted by any knowledge of day or night or color or brilliance of illusion. Therefore he could not be imagining the Land. His former mind had not contained the raw materials out of which to such dreams were made. When he appeared in the Land, when Lord Elena taught him that the rush of sensations which confused him was sight, the experience was altogether new. it did not restore to him something that he had lost. It opened in front of him like an oracle. He knew tha t the Land was real.

Caerroil Wildwood:

A garland of purple white orchid about his neck only heightened his austere dignity. From under his thick white brows, a sliver light shone from orbs without pupils or iris, and his glances had the force of physical impact. Still humming the refrain of his song, he approached Lord Mhoram. His gaze held the Lord motionless until they were almost within arm's reach of each other. Mhoram felt himself being probed. The sound of music continued, and some time passed before he realized that the Forestal was speaking to him, asking him, "Who dare's taint my song?"

Amok
Covenant watched two more Bloodgaurd came into the Close with the stranger between them. He was slim, simply clad in a cream-colored robe, and his movements were light, buoyant. Though he was nearly as tall as Covenenant, he seemed hardly old enough to have his full growth. There was a sense of boyish laughter in the way his unruly hair bounced as he came down the steps, as if he were amused by the preactions taken against him. But Covenant was not amused. With the new dimension of his sight, he could see why Crowl had said that the boy was "not as other men." Within his young fresh flesh were bones that seemed to radiate oldness, not age; they were not weak or infirm, but rather antiquity. His skeleton carried this oldness, this aura of time, as if he were merely a vessel for it. He existed for it rather than in spite of it. The sight baffled Covenenat's perceptions, made his eyes ache with conflicting impressions of dread and glory as he strained to comprehend.

If real world people like TC himself count separately what about Hile Troy?

And in the real world chapters: Sherrif Lyton, Dr. Berenford, Susie Thurston, the unnamed trucker, Sam Johnson the faith healer*, the little girl TC saved and her parents, Megan Roman, and Joan.

* I admit I had to look that one up
