Actually, I don't like that the old "gospel" is being changed.

This is by far the best writing he has ever done. The ONLY reason i don't consider this the best is simply because there's no Covenant. And believe me, it speaks volumes for him to actually be able to write a book in the series without Thomas Covenant and for me to still think it is THAT good. This book is amazing. If his writing has improved this much, and I think it has by leaps and bounds...then I can't imagine how good the next book is going to be.

I don't mind it when he sheds new light on old events, or, in the chapters in the past, fleshes out vague mythology with reality. But I also do not like it when past facts are tampered with. While I love FR, the issue with the One Tree's Guardian (or lack thereof) in the distant past is very annoying, IMO. SRD will owe us an explanation for that one (he ignored the question when asked recently in the GI) and maybe it will figure in some way in the next book, since it involves the Worm and its possible waking.

I'm not sure I necessarily see the old gospel as having been changed. We're just becoming more aware of what really happened, and how. The past being manifest in the present and all that, and the Land's original history of having been told in the 1st chrons by people who lacked some key facts and whose memory of events had been distorted by generations of telling...

As for the One Tree, didn't The Harrow and Infelice say that an Elohim had guarded it before Kenausten Ardenol/The Theomach? (One of the Appointed?)

Sure, presumably before this Appointed, the One Tree must have been unguarded, but I always thought that there must have been an Age before it became necessary to have a Guardian. It actually served to clarify a few things, from my point of view.
