How many Horcruxes?

Post by Cameraman Jenn »

I knew something was bothering me about the math of the horcruxes. Voldemort talks about creating seven horcruxes. Dumbledore mentions that Voldy was only going to make six and the seventh piece of soul was that which resided in Voldy. Voldy did make seven horcruxes which means that he actually split his soul into eight pieces.

1. The Diary
2. The Ring
3. The Locket
4. The Cup
5. The Diadem
6. The Snake Nagini
7. Harry's Scar

That leaves the eighth piece of soul the one which resides in V's body. In Dumbledore's explanation to Harry in HBP he conveniently leaves out the scar although it's clear he knew all along during the King's Cross bit at the end of DH. I don't know why I bring this up except that it irked me a bit that Dumbledore deliberately lied to Harry and that's kinda shitty considering it was about something so very quintessential. What do you guys think?

But some of what Dumbledore told Harry was true, in that Voldemort only intended to have a 7-part soul. I don't think he ever realized what he'd really done the night he killed Harry's parents. It doesn't bother me, simply because it just sort of fits in with the other ways Dumbledore misled Harry. And Dumbledore couldn't have told him that part of Voldemort's soul had attached itself to him -- Harry wasn't ready for that knowledge. I guess I've just already come to terms with Dumbledore's manipulative behavior.

Interesting, though -- I've read DH twice, and I didn't even think about it.

There were seven Horcruxes. Voldemort wanted to split his soul into seven pieces. I believe Rowling was banking on people not realising that those two things mean two seperate things.

Dumbledore lying is not news. I'm seriously trying to think of an occasion where Dumbledore *doesn't* lie, and coming up blank. (Well, arguably the end of book one)

Secrets and lies... that's how he was raised
