Love the tone-down Strat sound on Shine on you Crazy Diamond
Santana has some great sounds.
Hank Marvin's Strat (thu'Vox...I think?) sound is such a classic
Richie Blackmore on Child in Time
Steve Howe on Star Ship trooper end solo
Greg Lake's (Gibson?) Jumbo has a fantastic tone
Steve Hackett's early Genesis sounds are nice too

Also some of the sounds the lad in White Stripe produces are pretty tasty too.

The sound that Stevie Ray Vaughn was able to get out of a Strat and a Fender Twin seems impossible.

That was the very one I had in mind, but also listen to C'est la Vie lovely sound and some beautiful chord progressions.

I also love to death the intro of Ziggy Stardust. It's incredibly fun to play. And very simple. And it just sounds AWESOME.

Blackmore's got that great "overcooked" Strat sound that just rips.

Honestly, some of the 3 guitar stuff on earlier Radiohead albums just sounds out of this world. The beginning of "Anyone can Play Guitar" still gives me goosebumps.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention the heavy strings, jumbo frets, and the fact that he tuned his guitar down a half step. But still I have to believe that part of that huge sound was channeled out of him somehow.

I love the sound that Tony Iommi had on the old Sabbath albums, that was one thick sound. You really can't leave out Brian May when discussing guitar tone.

Hendrix's "Machine Gun" from Band of Gypsies

Most of U2's Zooropa disc. Not always the best songs in the world, but as for as guitar sounds go, cool as hell.

If anyone's interested, we had this conversation a while ago here. I suppose I could merge the topics after a few more cups of coffee.....

What I was really going for is specific examples of tone/sound that one finds appealing. I believe we have covered who our favorite players are already. My example of Blackfoot's "Train Train" is a good reference, I in fact own no Blackfoot albums, and I could not even tell you who the guitarist is but when the song comes on the radio I always marvel at the sound of the guitar. I was not aware that such a thread existed, merge at will.

Speaking of Satriani, Midnight off of SWtA sounds like nothing else in this world. I've never heard anything like it, and the album is 20 years old!
