X-Files Sequel....Finally!

Post by Cail »

Article
By now you know the truth because it's out there: Mulder and Scully are back. The long-awaited film sequel based on the beloved cult TV series will begin production this December in Vancouver, according to Twentieth Century Fox, with a release date set for July 25, 2008. (An official title is still being hammered out.) Creator Chris Carter says that the movie will focus on a stand-alone mystery rather than exploring the show's dense mythology. Beyond that, he's not spilling details, only saying, "It will be scary."

So what finally got the long-gestating project off the ground? According to Carter, who will direct the movie and co-write the script with X-Files exec producer Frank Spotnitz, years of contract disputes with Fox were resolved when the threat of an impending writers' strike came to a head. "If we don't do it now and the strike was protracted, it would force the movie to come out several years from now," he says. "And that was too late. It was either now or never." We like that answer too.
It'll be interesting to see if the chemistry still works.

Unfortunately, this effectively puts the final nail in the coffin for a MillenniuM movie.

Been hearing about this for years. Happy to see it's finally becoming a reality. Loved the X-Files. I just hope the second film is as entertaining as the series and a bit better than the first film, which I liked just fine. :-)

I thought the first film got slagged undeservedly. I really enjoyed it.

I really wanted to like the first movie, but it just fell flat for me. Still, I'm glad they're making another one.

I enjoyed the movie quite a bit, but that seems to be about the time when they jumped the shark. It was the last great moment before some decent episodes, but nothing with a great feel to it. I had great hopes with Doggett, and that lady whose name eludes, but they could never figure out the chemistry with any of the remaining characters. And then they sinned against nature by killing the Lone Gunman (an episode I still haven't seen).

I'm excited! I've just spent the best part of this year watching - in order - all 9 seasons and the first X-Files movie.

I think the X-files broke new ground for a TV series. It was complex on a level not attempted before in TV (that I know of), it assumed its viewers were intelligent and could follow their storylines, it mostly succeeded in being scary in a serious way. The writing was of a consistently high quality, the visual tone and music were stellar, and it only rarely suffered from "poor standalone episode syndrome".

Also, the few episodes that tried to be funny, I found hilarious.

... and Cail is spot on, Duchovny and Anderson are magical together.

I'll be there opening night with my popcorn for the movie. :)

PS TIme I got off my butt and watched Millenium.

So what happens with the alien invasion? I'm fine with the movie as long as it is set before the last season, however.

I think David Duchovny should come back in the film, not as Fox Mulder, but as his character from Californication . . .

Meh, this strikes me as flogging a dead alien. Let the X-Files lie.

It is my understanding that this movie is going to be a "monster" tyope movie, not a CSM-type. Anyone ever heard this song:

Totally agree. As far as I'm concerned, the X-Files only had steam for the first 2 seasons, then it went rapidly down hill.

The first movie treaded water, and felt like an extended episode. I'm somewhat relieved the movie won't be about the ever-contradictory silliness of the Alien conspiracy plots (yawn), but I am almost certain I won't bother to see it anyway.

But if they did a Californication cross-over . . .

This is the first I've heard of the movie and I gotta say, I'm pretty excited. A little nervous that it might royally bite, but excited all the same.

Oh, and Loremaster, if I remember right, continuity shouldn't be an issue. Didn't they set the date for the alien invasion in like 2012 or something in that last episode?

2012?

As in the end of the world according to the Aztec calendar, 2012?

Yup, I think so. It's been a while since I've seen the last X-files episode, but I'm pretty sure that was the date they used, and referenced the Aztec calendar as well.

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. It appears that Lance Henrikson recently appeared at a UK convention and gave a really coy answer to a fan's question regarding a potential appearance in a certain sequel to a certain movie about a certain pair of FBI agents who investigate certain FILES... I love answers like the one Henrikson gave. They make it really fun to be a fan and start the speculation really churning!
  • Hi Harry,

Just got back from Collectormania in Manchester UK, and was in the question/ answer show with Lance Henrikson, first off can I say what a gentleman this guy is, he has been one of my favourite actors from Bishop to Frank Black. Anyway he was asked if he would be in the next XFiles movie with the cross over storyline from Millenium and he said he wasnt allowed to talk about it at the moment but he would leave it up to us to decide what that statement meant!!

Anyway if you use this just call me,

Just saw the title they're giving the film - X Files: I Want to Believe. - which is the line on the poster behind Mulder's desk.
