I can understand that, but I think it's unlikely, on the basis that SRD said in a Q&A in Manchester that he deliberately keeps his own experiences and struggles out of his books.

SRD said in a Q&A in Manchester that he deliberately keeps his own experiences and struggles out of his books.
Well . . . that said,

I'm still of the opinion an artist's catharsis, a creative outlet,

is by definition his own experience anyways however allegorical and figurative.

Saying some kind of domestic tensions or disappointments, as well as growing up in India while his father treated Lepers, didn't inspire him to write about a character like Thomas Covenant is like saying Tolkein's Lord of the Rings Trilogy had nothing to do with the fact that he was in the trenches during World War I.

Not that I'm saying he wouldn't appreciate the gift anyways . . . just wondering . . . how he would take it.

how about a staff instead of a ring?
or a staff with the ring on it?
it could be inscribed and presented to him?

KW gave SRD a plaque in Albuquerque in June, commemorating the 30th anniversary this year of LFB.

So, I guess that you would be against sending him a white gold cock-ring?

Yes, but I am sure it is for different reasons than the ones you might imagine.

Rather than send a white gold wedding ring, how about we just take two of his fingers?

I like the idea of something that represents the GAP series.
He doesn't seem to get a lot of recognition for that series.

I think he's still pretty blown away by the plaque-I've seen photos of other author's offices, Simmons, Martin and Brin-to name a few, and they seem pretty dang proud of their plaques. I'd hold of on the ring for awhile-after all he just got married to Jennifer...

interesting how this topic has been twisted. Inever said "wedding ring" I said "White gold ring" ONe signifies true inner strength and power the other the establishment of marriage.you tell me which is fantasy?if you think your "a bunch of strangers" to SRD, think again.I beleive the connection between an author and a reader (while reading, not disscussing)is probably the most REAL thing we can experience.

The ideal of marriage was a pretty big deal to Covenant and the ring was a big symbol in that regard, or loss kevinswatch.ihugny.com/phpBB2/album_pag ... ic_id=1233 it's actually gold inlay but appears white here...

The only way would be thru his official contact. Post the question to his Public Rep and they would contact SRD and they could answer for him.

The ring , I think shouldn't be a wedding ringtype but more along the lines of a class ring. (The fat big ones)

A small clear gem (quartz type) square shape inset in the center. On each side there are 2 circular inserts.

Now White Gold is made five different ways(the composites) From the 18K gold thru 14K. The ring itself would be made from the highest quality white gold and each of the circular inserts, made from the remaining four.
The circular inserts would be 1/8" wide and thick enough to be sligtly raised above the plane of the ring.

Inside inscribed on the ring would be ' Friends from KevinsWatch '
( I originally had Fiends, nice having preview optios)

My idea of a an inscription would be the seven power words.

Melenkurion Abatha(larger letters) would be on top and the rest forming a half circle (if needed) along the bottom. (To clear the inserts and curve upwards towards the top two words)
What's this silver looking ring doing on my finger?

While we're at it, let's get another ring, inscribe "One ring to rule them all and in the darkness bind them" on it, and mail it to Tolkien's estate. Then Christopher can do whatever he wants with it. :D

But in all seriousness, it sounds like a really nice idea, but it strikes me as being a little over the top, somehow. If I were him, and someone sent me something like that, I think I'd feel sort of awkward about it. Not that I wouldn't appreciate the gesture, of course, but it would be weird.
“...The conversations had a nightmare flatness, talking dice spilled in the tube metal chairs, human aggregates disintegrating in cosmic inanity, random events in a dying universe where everything is exactly what it appears to be and no other relation than juxtaposition is possible.”

“There are two kinds of sufferers in this world: those who suffer from a lack of life, and those who suffer from an overabundance.”

"Meantime we shall express our darker purpose."

If you want to thank Donaldson, I think the best thing you could do would be to buy an extra copy of his book. Donate one to your library. Inscribe that.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”
