I've got the game, and I might be interested, but to be honest I never really got my head around Civ 4.

I used to kick at Civ and Civ 2 (my favourite Civ), and wasn't too bad at Civ 3.

But Civ 4 just flummoxed me. NFI what was going on. Mind you, I only played one campaign.

Hell, I'll dust my disc off and play just to give you lot some easily conquered territories. :D

I wouldn't be so sure. I've never been any good at the 'war' parts of this game either. In single player I usually end up running the whole game until time victory with barely any fighting, or if time victory is off, playing until the point where the AI run out of things to do and so all declare war on the human player and proceed to wipe him out.

Well I'll have a shot then (mostly because I'm still grateful for the help you gave me a year or so back about installing the RTR mod for RTW, Murrin :D ). You may find me playing an annoyingly defensive style, though.

I only have the original vanilla CD, do I need to get any patches or other online stuff?

I'm on vanilla, but patched to the latest version (through the 'advanced' menu, v1.7something, IIRC).

That's an in-game menu option from the sound of it, no?

Gotta find the disc and it will be a few days at least because of spring-cleaning.

Yeah. "Advanced">"Check for Updates". Pretty simple to use.

Nathan and I managed to get on and playa game today. All worked well enough getting connected and that.

As for the game itself, I completely screwed up because I had forgotten the best way to play the Chinese, so I spent half the game licking my wounds while Nathan cleared out the AI factions without even breaking a sweat.

I've since had a look and worked out where I went wrong, so I mgiht do better next time (I did warn you I wasn't good at the war part of it).

That was a pretty enjoyable game. Perhaps we should play a pangaea next time so that we end up on the same landmass.

I'd be up for trying that, and I only have the basic game too. I also kind of suck. Never been able to win at this game since CIV II!
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

Heh. The last time I remember actually winning a game was by Diplomatic Victory. Be nice to have you join us, Nav.

Pangaea might be a good idea, yeah. The continents maps split the game a little too thoroughly in two.

I always liked the archipelago map, although sometimes I'd find my island was just too far away from the others for a trireme crossing, thus handing a major advantage to my enemies.

Island maps are good, because the enemy rarely invades with land troops--by the time their ships are done smashing up your defenses, they're usually ready to make peace.

I'm sure I found a good 'no cd' patch for my sister's machine, might be worth looking for one. Just make sure your security software's up to date first!

Drop me a PM when you're next planning to play. Best to set aside a few hours, Sunday afternoon/evening maybe? I guess that would be mid morning for the Dreaming and early morning for Trapper.

Montressor bought me Civilization IV for Christmas, so it's looking likely I will be taking part!
