Just finished Season 2. I put this series up there with Band of Brothers, From the Earth to the Moon, Lonesome Dove, The Civil War, etc - it's one of the best shows I've ever seen. I loved every character, the writing is simply outstanding, it's funny, heartbreaking, shocking at times......I could go on and on. I can't say enough about this series.

Now if they could just make a series out of Decline and Fall... :P

I just finished watching the second season, and I have to agree. This was a fantastic show. One of the interesting things to me was that the areas of the show I was interested in switched between the seasons. First season, what drew me in was the everyman part of roman life; Verenus, Pullo, the women opperating behind the scences. I didn't get into the historical/political aspect as much - neither Ceaser or Pompey looked or acted how I expected. Not that they were bad, but I just had a tough time with it. Cicerco, though was spot on.

Second season, that flipped. I thought the political aspects were great from the start, and was mainly watching for that part. Antony and Octavian were fanatstic, Cleopatra, Brutus, Octavian, all great. I had a tougher time with the Verenus/Pullo arc at the start though. The whole "Verenus descends to the underworld" section didn't quite jive for me. It got better as the season progressed though.

It's reallly a shame this got cancelled.

Agreed, and good post. I just bought Season One on DVD, and I'll get Season Two probably after Christmas. I loved the political/historical aspects of the series from the beginning, but it's the great characters of Vorenus and Pullo that really hooked me into this show.

Definetly Pullo and Vorenus stole the show in the first part of the first season. (Of course, it helped that the actressess were hot, too :D )
Another point too, as general thing, I usually don't get much into costumes and sets and the like, but in the show I really did. Everything going on in the background of the main actors was just excellent as well.

I loved this show. As a historian, I appreciated the day to day aspects of the show. I thought the way they made Rome look was dead on. It would be very crowded.

Some of the situations were not correct. For example, Atia and Antony were married to other people and never had an affair.

However, I think they got the personalities of the characters correct. This was probably one of the best Julius Caesar's I have ever seen and Octavian was dead on!

Just a few thoughts:

I want to get the DVD's but I am too cheap.

I really wish Vorenus hadn't died.

I wish HBO would have a third season because what happened over the next few caesars was very interesting as well.

Titus Pullo is hot!

Me too. Vorenus is one of my favorite characters ever.
