Took delivery today of a black Custom, new at virtually a second hand price. Plays like a dream and sounds amazing, cut, sustain and really gutsy. Off now to break it in.

Um...I just found this forum....
I play clarinet, soprano recorder, six-string acoustic guitar (badly -- no wait, make that pathetically). I played alto sax in jazz band in high school, but I never owned one (though I still have the mouthpiece), and oh my goodness, that was a lot of years ago. I even played clarinet professionally (in my hometown's municipal band) but haven't done anything with it lately.
Recently I've been dinking around with tin whistles and the Irish flute. I just bought a D flute at the Renn Fest last weekend.
I can kinda sing, too.

Oh how intriguing is that? If you'd said you CAN sing, I wouldn't be interested! But I love 'kinda' - lets face it, the best singers aren't classic singers, they have their own WAY!! What is your 'kinda'?????????I can kinda sing, too.

Mostly kinda out of practice.
You're right that I'm not trained. I didn't have time in my class schedule to take both band and choir, so I opted for band. I did sing in the chorus in my high school's musicals (but see note above about how long ago that was...). I sing along in the car to CDs by loud '80s bands when I'm driving cross-country (there's nothing like "Styx Greatest Hits" to keep you awake on a long drive!). Usually I'm even on key.
OTOH, my daughter Batsutousai sings in her college choir. Now *she* has a lovely voice.

I played the piano for about a year, and eventually worked out that I don't have that much coordination, so as instruments go, I stick to air-drumming, and air DJ-ing.
I am, however, a closet singer and I'm not bad. Mostly I do mimicry, but I can handle a microphone better than at least half of anyone who's ever been on MTV in the last ten years.*
*I realise that that's not saying much, but it's all about perspective.

"But I don't want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can't help that," said the Cat: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."
"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."
Endut!

I'll flip through the yellow pages and see if anyone offers lessons. Once I've had a bit of practice, you can count me in. =P

Just bought a PRS 513 rosewood, emerald green. Picked it up in the States when visiting recently and gave it it's first outing last night at rehearsals. Sounds divine and plays so easily PRS really have got it right with this one apart from the 13 pick-up positions giving both single coil and humbucking (plus a few hybrid souds), its playability is really fantastic.

PRS used to build their guitars about 10 miles from where I'm currently sitting, now it's about 20. I've toured their plant, nearly went to work for them about 15 years ago, and met Paul several times (he's an aloof ass).
I like guitars. A lot. For the life of me, I cannot see what's so special about PRS's. I mean, they're nice, but I can't see dropping 4 grand on one.

Ahhh, but they are $10K here in Oz, and the strong dollar made it a very good deal.Cail wrote:PRS used to build their guitars about 10 miles from where I'm currently sitting, now it's about 20. As for what's special, I like the additional cutaway space, it suits my hands, I also like the the additional variations available though the pick-up config. The sound is rich and whilst not a Les Paul when in Humbucking mode, it does give great sustain and probably better able to do harmonic licks.
The neck is a dream to play, the hardness of the wood maintaining a cool satin surface even when your hands are sweating.
This is a very well put together axe, its got a 10 top and is finished beautifully. I envy you doing the tour, I saw some of it on youtube. Trust me Cail if you like guitars I think you'd have a hard time dissing the 513 after playing it.
Anyway I'm as pleased as punch so stop pissing on my parade!

It may well be a defense mechanism....You know, not liking a really expensive guitar....

Well since there's been some major necromancy on this thread I'm gonna chime in and mention I play the guitar too (there's just too many of us around).
My favourite guitar is an Ibanez JS1000 which is just awesome, but I also have a European RG model which is very nice.
I own two amps: a (silverface) Fender Twin Reverb (oh yeah) and an Engl Powerball.
I don't use too many effects, usually just a Hughes and Kettner Rotosphere Mark II.

Fair enough Cail.....If you're ever in Oz, you can come fool around on it and then tell me just how terrible an experience it was!
Give it a bit of time tho' mate you might change your mind on a few things, I did. It is something I could never have done when married, but is now an indulgence I figure I've earned some years on.....or of course it could be a mid life crisis, but who the hell cares.
SJ, I too have a silverface Fender Twin, but it is just too powerful and I'm thinking of trading it for a Mesa Boogie 50:5, 50 watts is more than I'll ever need and if I did need more I'd just mike it up, but the 5 watt setting is more realistic for rehearsals etc, the twin is fantastic but you can't crank it or relly drive it and live in a house with windows or a street with neighbours!

Just reread this thread and realized that dAN was very mean to me. Anyway, demo-tape or not, I played with a fellow harp player a few months ago and when I did some "Room to Move" he was so impressed he gave me his Horner Special 20 C. If you know anything about harmonicas you know it's a damm fine instrument-you can play a decent tune on it by just breathing into it.

I play a Fender American standard Stratocaster. It's probably 20 years old. Silver body, white pickguard, rosewood fretboard. And my Amp is a Fender Deluxe 85 with reverb and channel switching between clean and distorted tones.
I've also got an Ovatian acoustic/electric 12 string, and an old six string acoustic lying around somewhere.
