You should watch Neal's dvd "Testimony". It's awesome! I've pretty much got all his solo cds, all of Spock's Beard, and most all of the Flower Kings. I'm gonna try to get the Transatlantic stuff next, then maybe move on to Steve Hackett....if you know any other band I should be looking at, let me know.

I love Transatlantic. If they were still around, they'd almost be my fave over SB. While I love some of the Flower Kings matierial, that's the catch -- some. A lot of it just doesn't seem to land for me. I can never put my finger on it, maybe it's that sometimes it lacks emotion. But some of it is fabulous.
To me, Transatlantic is like the best part of FK added to Neal... pretty much the best of both worlds!
Other bands? Jeez, where should I start?
Camel
Mangala Vallis
Marillion (especially the earlier stuff w/ Fish)
Iluvatar
earlier Pendragon
earlier Porcupine Tree (more recent PTree is also excellent, but is much more alt-rock)
that should keep you busy for a while.

Y'know...I never got into Yes, ELP (except for Lucky Man, which I dig righteously), or any of that branch of the rock n' roll tree.....
...someone, tell me why this sort of Avant Garde (arty) rock is relevant and good... I am not trying to harsh on anyone, I am pointing out my deficiency...I just don't get it.

Yes, Several times, although I much prefer Anderson and Howe.
Ooo, Guns...danlo had posted a link to The Gates of Delirium once, but because of my connection I didn't save it.
However, my absolute favorite is the entire side two of Going for the One, which consists of Wondrous Stories/Awaken. When that was played at the In the Round tour, I just...ascended.
...of course, I was pretty far gone in my trip at that point of the concert as well, but the music put me over the top...
If there is a YouTube of that, that is what I would recommend for a start.

I've managed to become quite the prog fan without resorting to using copius amounts of drugs, danlo. Of course, I'm no longer sure of my sanity, but, as long as I still have my looks, who really cares?danlo wrote:Obviously, you haven't done enough drugs...LOL!!!

Re: Prog
Funny story, a lot of people call the Prog rock movement "Post-Psychadelic Rock" Jimi Hendrix was actually interested in joining Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, and David Palmer to make a band to be titled H.E.L.P. Hendrix, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. How different would music be!Inspector Clouseau wrote: There is no prog analogy to Jimi Hendrix, Curt Cobain, Bon Scott, Janis Joplin, John Bonham, Syd Viscious, Peter Green, Joe Perry, Bob Dylan....need I go on? And yet, rock itself seems to hold prog rock in the same contempt that parents and evangelists hold rock in. Irony, or hypocracy? Who can tell.
Also, you forget Syd Barret

I didn't forget Syd at all. Under Syd, Pink Floyd was Psychadelic, not Prog. Pink Floyd wasn't prog until well after Syd left the band.

And oddly enough, I don't think "Pink Floyd" when I think "Prog" (even though they clearly are).

Just a quick question. Will I like Crimson King? I've heard many good things about them (mostly on this board) but have never heard any of their stuff. Please help. Who do they sound most like? Link me to a song or two. If you can convince me I'll go buy one of their discs today!
War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.
