There is little room for levity here.Emotional Leper wrote:Actually, I think all the people trying to get me to quit smoking will give me a heart attack long before the cancer sets in.A Gunslinger wrote:My hats (all of them) are off to those of you who have quit...stay strong.
It WILL KILL you.
If you stop now you may be able to avoid heart attacks and cancer, emphysema and stinkiness and choose your own way to die. Ahh youth....
I remember when I was young, smoking with my crew and performing Zippo™ tricks with the mindset that I could quit as soon as I wanted but really had no reason, everbody else should mind their own, yet on wanting to quit at 18 I found out it was rather difficult and deciding not to.
I also remember at this time two years ago, age 34, not being able to feel my hands and feet in the morning due to bad circulation. And the wheezing sound when I inhale, and the loud throat clearing ritual I would perform endlessly. The loose tobacco all over my house, car, work truck, forklift and clothes from rolling my own cigs. The annual bronchitis/walking pneumonia battle, which includes begging for antibiotics from doctors, and the taste of cigarettes while being sick. I remember the x-ray showing the onset of emphysema and the guy who explained that my lungs were turning into cardboard.
So, so stupid.
So much effort for so little pleasure.
Three hundred four and seventy days since I smoked tobacco and all these things, these traits that so represented me, gone, and I surely do not miss them.
If you smoke, quit.
If you can't bring yourself to quitting...

So that would be what, Mormon reverends, Puritans from the 1600's, Christian Scientists?Emotional Leper wrote:The only people whose 'quit smoking' talk I give the slightest bit of creedance to are people who are equally opposed to all alcohol and caffeine consumption.
Truth is I don't expect anybody to listen to what I have to say about the problems with smoking as any smoker will find these things out for themselves sooner or later.

Yep. That would be about right. Anyone who singles out one particular drug because it's bad for you but actively indulges in others, well, shouldn't be lecturing me about my bad habits.bloodguard bob wrote:So that would be what, Mormon reverends, Puritans from the 1600's, Christian Scientists?Emotional Leper wrote:The only people whose 'quit smoking' talk I give the slightest bit of creedance to are people who are equally opposed to all alcohol and caffeine consumption.

All you guys who are doing so well at quitting, keep up the good work! You guys rock! WHOOO HOOO! It's inspirational.

I didn't read anybody lecturing, I, so far, have only read about experiences. But in my opinion one who lacks the experience of long term, heavy nicotine abuse or the horrific memory of watching a loved one shrivel and die from nicotine abuse has nothing to rebut on the topic of the benefits and difficulties of quitting smoking.Emotional Leper wrote:Yep. So yes, as CMJ says, we can argue about how bitchin' smoking is in the Tank but let's support each other here.
