The most I did was two pack a weeks.
One through the working week, one on the wwekend.
I thought you were a ripe grape
a cabernet sauvignon
a bottle in the cellar
the kind you keep for a really long time

He never stopped Cag.
Even when eating and drinking.
Bite of food.
Drag.
Sip of whatever he was drinking,
Drag.
A cigarette always dangled between his fingers.
And now I resent that he used to put my Mom, my sister and myself with him in the car so he could buy the maximum number of cartons of Vice-roys from the Seminoles for each of us, instead of just what he was allowed to purchase on his own.

Yeah, I think if I hung out with him for an afternoon or two, it would probably be a bigger deterrent to smoke than anything else. Yick. But that's dedication there.

I lived in a family whose parents never wanted us around smoking. Yet my older sister picked it up from hanging out with "wrong crowd." Me...I didn't even have my first drag of a cigarette until I was in high school, and that was because I was madly in love with an exchange student from Spain who lived next door to me. I was such a dork, I pretty much never talked to her, but I did occasionally, and invited her over one day. She smoked her filterless tough as nails Spanish cigarettes that took the enamel off the teeth of the average seasoned American smoker and made them hack and cough from their strength. She didn't smoke all of it, and I lit up the butt long after she had gone just to see what it was like, and of course to put my lips where hers had been. I thought I would die. My pink, virginal lungs couldn't take it.

A few years later, I got into the punk scene, and was around some smokers, and after one bad night, the girlfriend at the time and I bought a pack of Camels. We smoked one each and were done. I didn't inhale as I was a singer, and didn't want to mess with the voice. It felt nice and cool and all that crap, and occasionally I'd bum one from someone and not inhale; just put it in my mouth and exhale.

A few years later, I discovered I liked cloves, and after one bad day after working at Toys R Us around Christmas, I finally allowed myself to inhale.

In college, I had a smoker friend, and I'd occasionally bum, and then ended up buying a pack that led to several. I was just a social smoker in those days, and whenever I felt like I was having too much, I'd just quit for a month or more just to prove I could.

When I went through my divorce, I became a full time smoker. And have been ever since, with the exception of 2005 when I quit until 2006 when again an unpleasant breakup led me to take up smoking again.

There's my history, and now I can write them off again. G'bye my friendly little coffin-nails.

My most sincere thanks to everyone who has lent their support, and my encouragement to everyone else fighting this same battle. That's how I look at it most of the time, as a battle. I'm up against what I consider to be the weaker part of myself, put surprisingly enough the little sh%t puts up quite a fight sometimes. I've spent more time in here and more time with my healthier hobbies, as a reminder that I have much better things to do with my time and energy. Not to mention that it's much colder lately, and I never smoked in the house with my daughter, which helps. Thanks again everybody, for everything. I hope I can return the favor.

That's the best kind of support you can get.

Good luck to all the quitters here. :)

My Mom has smoked for about as long as I can remember, except for about a year or two in the eighties. She'd quit, and then her brother was accidentally killed, and she went back to smoking again. Now she says she doesn't think she can quit. I don't track her smoking, but it seems to me that she is a chain smoker. I'm fairly certain she will get lung cancer or emphysema and die. She already has a bad cough, and I think she may have COPD already. Anyway, I admire what all of you are doing, and just wish that others had the strength and determination to quit as well.
