What are you looking at?
Being a native Chicagoan, I like to consider myself an expert on many things - especially pizza. Nobody's got pizza like us. It's been my experience (Which is, admittedly, not very encompassing) that everything else tends to fall flat. Sometimes literally.
As for my own habits, I tend to be pretty simple - give me sausage, pepperoni, or some other form of meat, and I'm happy. I don't really go for all of the mushrooms and onions and olives and such on account of me being painfully choosy when it comes to what I eat.
And naturally, the pizza must be laden down by so much cheese that the crust folds over on itself, and the sauce must be overflowing. If it's not messy, it's not pizza.
I can back up that assurance. If you ain't in Chicago, you ain't eating Chicago-style pizza. They may try to trick you into thinking that you are, but, they're filthy liars. I don't know why, but it seems like the minute somebody takes a Chicago-style recipe out of the area, it turns to crap. It's a strange phenomena, and I like to call it "Chicago Is Awesome".Menolly wrote:I've had Chicago-style deep dish at a Pizzeria Uno chain store in Pompano Beach. I have been reassured that is nothing like the real thing, as it was terrible.

This thread is making me hungry for pizza. I haven't had it in a long time.
I generally like those veggie toppings on pizzas. Yum!
A local place made a fresh basil, fresh tomato and feta cheese pizza that was pretty tasty.

Depends on my mood. I do really like Hawaiian style - pineapples, ham and onion, on a thin crust. My other staple is pepperoni, sausage, mushroom and black olives in a deep dish. I have occaisionally tried a "white" or bianca pizza with sausage, mushrooms and a garlic butter type sauce in place of tomata sauce which I quite like also.

Although I'm a fan of both authentic Chicago and NY pizzas, Carriage Inn Pizza in Tell City, IN serves my favorite pizza on this planet - no contest.
Chewy cracker crust. Slightly sweetened basil-y sauce, pieces of finely ground italian sausage, diced bits of green pepper & onion & green olive & prosciutto ham, sliced mushrooms, mozzarella cheese, secret seasoning blend, and sliced pepperoni near the top (so it ever-so-slightly crisps as it bakes). Cross-cut into rectangular pieces, and served with a heaping portion of pepperoncini's and a frosted pitcher of your favorite draft beer (as long as its Miller Lite). Some of the best things in life are nowhere near four star...

I think that the reason God invented mushrooms was to make pizza better!
I make deep dish pizza in a pie plate! Sqish that dough until it comes up the sides, fill it with an inch of sauce and toppings, cover with cheese.
Also, I add grated parmesian cheese (from the green can) to the dough. This makes it a bit crispier.

I adore pizza. . . sometimes I buy it, and sometimes I make it. My favorite takeout combinations are :
sausage and mushroom (from Casey's)
mushroom, olive, and onion
veggie--no peppers
supreme--no peppers
hawaiian style
Taco pizza (from Casey's): refried beans, hot sauce, sausage, mozzarella and cheddar cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and crushed doritoes
Barbeque pizza (from Casey's); beef in a sweet barbeque sauce, and tons of cheese
As you may have gathered, my favorite pizza place is Casey's. The strange thing about it is that Casey's is a convenience store. There aren't a whole lot in existance, so I don't get to have it often. However, there is one relatively near my parents' home, so when I visit I often pick up pizza for dinner. Casey's uses a really great tasting cheese, and they use a lot of it!
When I make pizza, I like to make the following:
Chicken Artichoke: I use marinara sauce, pizza blend cheese, chopped cooked chicken breasts, and marinated artichokes
Chicken Bacon Ranch--I use ranch dressing as the sauce, layer with pizza blend cheese, top with chopped cooked chicken breast, crumbled bacon, and scallions
Deep Dish Sausage Mushroom (self explanatory)
Mushroom Alfredo Pizza--use a top quality jar Alfredo sauce as the base, saute great mushrooms and sweet onions in butter, put those on the base, and top with pizza blend. I grate fresh parmesano-reggiano on top of this at the table.
With pizza, you are limited only by your own imagination. Oh, and I don't much care for pepperoni. I find it very greasy, and my stomach doesn't like that.

I like to use a pizza screen instead of a stone. EXCELLENT for reheating delivery; definitely worth the time. I don't make my own pizza, but that would be a fun family activity, I think we'll try it. Of course, the kids like cheese and the little one will peel the pepperoni off and not eat it, yet still insists on pepperoni- go figure. I guess he likes the slight flavor of it or something. I like anything but black olives.

Good thing I ate lunch before I saw this thread.... <drools>
We almost always order out, as opposed to making our own. The girls prefer Pizza Hut hand-tossed -- or better yet, stuffed crust -- with black olives. In fact, Batty won't eat any pizza *but* Pizza Hut, so that's what we generally end up with, even tho I think it's way too salty.
I like either Veggie Lover's or pepperoni & mushroom. There's a chain here called Vocelli's which I like a lot. Or Papa John's.
I've made pizza before. Mine seems kinda meh. This is one of those things I'd rather let somebody else make....

Kidding. Of course I know Dominoes and Pizza hut. But that "pizza" would make every italian rotate in their graves. Even those that aren't dead.

I've O.D'd on pizza the last couple of days. I bought a deep dish pizza on the way home from work on Friday which carried over to dinner last night. Also, I stopped for lunch yesterday at a California Pizza Kitchen, first time in years I'd done so; there used to be one close to where I once worked. I had a Mango Tandoori Chicken pizza which was pretty good.

I had a slice of pizza earlier this week, but it wasn't so great - plain cheese and not hot enough.
