Lyr, I too have had farm experience. There is a big difference between humane killing and watching an animal suffer or watching/causing a needless death. When I hit that opossum I pulled over and went to assess the damage. I had crushed it's back half. I used a tire iron to put it out of it's misery and wept the whole time. My father, years later, was working in the garden at dusk when he saw someone hit another opossum and not stop. He went down to make sure the animal was not suffering and had to put her out of her misery but also noticed, (thank the biologist) that she was a mother opossum. He took the baby from her pouch and we raised him up to his late opossum "teens" and released him in a wildlife refuge. From the instant I saw him he became my baby. I even took him to work with me in a basket so that I could give him his bottles on time. He used to love to curl up on my chest laying directly over my heart and have me cover him with my hand, his tiny tail curled around my pinky finger and sleep. We named him "Ain't for Long" because my Dad said "He's ain't for long in this world without a momma." I figure he probably lived a good long life. He was pretty able to forage for himself, going out at night and coming back in the morning by the time we released him.

The only thing I ever hit was my 13 year old dog the day after I got my driver's license at 16.

Although she was killed on impact, Mom made me drive her to the vet for verification.

I suspect it was more to get me back behind the wheel right after killing my own pet the day after I started driving on my own, for fear I would never do so again otherwise, than to verify that yes indeed, I had killed Lady.

*weeps*

Oh dear LORD Pam. That is the worst story I have EVER heard. It's worse than how my cat Xerxes was killed. You could follow the tire tracks from whatever punk asses ran her down on purpose through my neighbor's yard. Ugh, just Ugh. I am so sorry. I can't even imagine your pain. |G |G |G |G |G I wish those faces of the huggers weren't smiling. There is no "I feel your pain" emoticon. Or rather, I feel pain and I wish to comfort you emoticon. Just remember it was an accident.

Iesu Christe!

I must be the only person in the world who has never killed something with a vehicle.

All I am saying EL is that animals greatly outnumber humans and there will come a time based on the odds that you will be driving and an animal will dart in front of your vehicle and there is NOTHING you can do to stop it. I straddled the opossum with my front wheels when it darted out and it ran under my rear wheels as I slammed on my brakes and tried not to hit it. It happens. It sucks.

Oh, I will eventually kill an animal again.

Just not with a vehicle.

I'm never that lucky.

*shuddering sigh*

Thanks all.

It's been over three decades since that happened.
I rarely think about it anymore.
But when I do...the memory is still pretty vivid.

I failed the last term of high school biology because as soon as the stench of Formaldehyde hit my nose, I sat in the school's Guidance Office. I told my teacher where I would be, Guidance verified I was there, I did extra work to compensate, and still received the 'F.'

Ah well...

Vicks vapor rub, applied under the nose. That should help with the smell.

That's what I use. I mean something to use other than FOrmaldehyde.
