The preview has me interested. It was a good use of no music, quite freaky when the kid is shouting his ass off about devils and the such.

Definitely a must see for me.

This simply the best movie I have seen in YEARS. The perfomances as well as the literary achievement were beyond compelling and compare.

The seething just-barely sub-surface spite and hatred of the main character kept me uncomfortable and squirming at the edge of my seat all night.

DDL should win not only this years oscar...but next year's as well. He was THAT good.

I agree completely. As cool as the preview was, it can't hint at just how awesome and singular an experience this film was. It's not just "a good movie this year" but one for the decade. My friend, who knows Daniel-Day Lewis better than I do, proclaimed it his best performance.

I am STILL thinking about it. I was mesmerized... I am seeing Cloverfield today, in hopes of changing the mental scenry.

Why haven't more people commented in this thread? I've seen this movie three times in theaters now. It's absolutely stunning. I'm listening the soundtrack now. I am obsessed.

WOW! Best movie I've seen in...well...forever. Brilliant.

As stunning as DDL was I think the real star was the score. Normally I wouldn't even notice the music in a movie, especially on first viewing (unless it's force fed to you by Tarantino) but the music set the scene perfectly every time. Dunno if the composer won an Oscar but he should have.

Go see this!

Excellent acting, beautiful cinematography which evokes mood, well acted. The story itself left me rather cold. It's a technically great movie but it didn't resonate with me emotionally.

On the list of good things about this movie, definitely don't forget the soundtrack, composed by Jonny Greenwood, which I think is stunningly beautiful, subtle, and evocative. I see your point about the story. I personally disagree, though. I particularly found Plainview's relationship with HW to be a potent subplot. And since Day-Lewis acted so brilliantly, I found myself absolutely caught up in Plainview's mad quest for power and privilege. It was hypnotic. And I saw it three times in theaters.

Agreed. The soundtrack was very good. As I said, the movie was very, very well done. Day-Lewis was astounding. Likewise the boy that played the preacher was great as well.

It's difficult to pin down why movies resonate with some and not others. I think that TWBB's lack of an emotional anchor may be what left me feeling unfulfilled. There was no one I wanted to root for. In that respect it was more like I was engaged in an intellectual observation rather than absorbed in an engrossing experience.

But hey, that's why Baskin Robbins has 32 flavors right!

It is definitely a cerebral film, an intense character study of a character who is more than unlikable. Daniel Plainview is basically worthy of nothing but disdain, even revulsion. Not only is he an a despicable person, he's scary as shit. People say a lot of the same things about Thomas Covenant too.

I saw this a while back and I'm going to have to be a voice of dissent.

I wish I could have the (what seemed like) 5 hours of my life spent watching it. What was the point of the film? It didn't go anywhere? It didn't really tell a story as such, it just followed a man through his rather unrealistic life. I didn't find the events, or the characters' reactions to them to be believable.

I found the soundtrack to be the most annoying thing about it, followed closely by the drab, washed-out colours present throughout. It was repetitive, irritating and, worst of all, unmemorable.

I rate this film second only to Solaris on my list of "worst films ever".

I donno. I saw this earlier in the year (I forgot when), but was fairly bored by it. I thought it was sort of interesting, but overall found it to be simply boring. And yeah, I don't remember the soundtrack, but I don't remember it being too spectacular. And the ending was just weird.

I personally enjoyed No Country for Old Men a lot more.-jay

Brilliant film, the way DDL shows the character's fall into madness is brilliant. The best bit was definatly the bowling scene near the end.
