I cannot think of one without thinking of the other.
I've always thought of that line in Starship Trooper that's in your sig. Beyond that, I see a connection w/ many prog band's lyrics but figured that was mostly a thematic thing... lots of prog is fantasy-based, and being mostly from the 70's that means primarily LOTR. And of course, many of Yes' lyrics are based on Yogananda, Siddhartha, War and Peace, etc. because that's what Jon was into at the time.

I used to wonder if SRD was a Genesis fan until I saw he said he only listens to classical... so much of their early stuff (ie Gabriel-era plus W&W) evokes the Land for me it seemed very possible that SRD was listening to it. Then again, what is Wagner if not essentially fantasy? (well, it's myth, but that's the basis for most fantasy).
Usivius wrote:not only do I think the music of Yes is linked to elves, I think Jon Anderson is an elf himself! Always felt that Yes was elf music in deguise. The lyrics and Anderson's voice and the way he allows the words to float over the fantastic music ... I am right there in Rivendell ... not necessarily a LotR thing, but an "elf-music" thing.
;)
Have you heard "The Fellowship" album? Jon sings on a few songs. It's LOTR-influenced and apparently the musicians play only Middle Ages-era instruments to give a more "authentic" flavor to the music. Very elf-like. Would've fit very well into the movies. That group may even be the result of the possibility that Yes was going to do some of the music...

A roommate loaned his Genesis records right as I was starting LFB and the first Chronicles. The opening of "Down and Out" puts me right atop Kevin's Watch to this day.

Thanks! I looked for a Genesis thread but didn't find one but searching led here.

Love your moniker also - anybody ever considered a Pern/Land crossover? :)

*blushing*

Um...yeah.

My appeal to Plains of Ra for a Ranyhyn was exactly that. But...my own writing is terrible, so...

Oops sorry if I missed that, I here am new. But don't lose hope, how hard can it be? Find a Ranyhyn egg, focus with affection, and it will surely impress on you!

Oh...I was chosen by a Ranyhyn, and Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea was tied into my story with the wondrous one's name. So, the Land, Pern, and Earthsea, all at once.

I could link you to where it was posted, and the excessively long wait I had. But, I would rather PM the link to you, if you wish to see it. I was new to the Watch myself when I presented myself to the Ranyhyn for consideration.

Yes, welcome!

You know what I always find funny about prog? The descriptions of the bands and their sound... it's always so epic often refers to other bands you've never heard of, and yet never actually tells you anything:

"Instead of pummeling the listener with intense and exploratory solos, which is so often the modus operandi of aggressive jazz groups, Zu instead slam through tight, intricate compositions in such a manner that sounds almost like Ahleuchatistas with sax instead of guitar (and a heavily distorted bass sound instead of a clean one). These compositions feature brutal rhythms, themes that fly by and change with breathtaking speed, and the kind of stop-on-a-dime spasticity that would make RIO fans jump for joy."

(that really was the first random review I found on Progreviews.com)

If you're pretty well versed in prog you should be able to ID these lyrics (no googling!)
I. STONES OF YEARS
Has the dawn ever seen your eyes?
Have the days made you so unwise?
Realize, you are.
Had you talked to the winds of time,
Then you'd know how the water rhyme.
Taste of wine,
How can you know where you've been?
In time you'll see the sign,
And realize your sin.
Will you know how the seed is sown?
All your time has been overgrown,
Never known.
Have you walked on the stones of years?
When you speak, is it you that hears?
Are your ears full?
You can't hear anything at all.

II. MASS
The preacher said a prayer,
Save ev'ry single hair on his head.
He's dead.
The minister of hate had just arrived too late to be spared.
Who cared?
The weaver in the web that he made!
The pilgrim wandered in,
Commiting ev'ry sin that he could
So good...
The cardinal of grief was set in his belief he'd saved
From the grave
The weaver in the web that he made!
The high priest took a blade
To bless the ones that prayed,
And all obeyed.
The messenger of fear is slowly growing, nearer to the time,
A sign.
The weaver in the web that he made!
A Bishop rings a bell,
A cloak of darkness fell across the ground,
Without a sound!
The silent choir sing and in their silence,
Bring jaded sound, harmonic ground.
The weaver in the web that he made!

III. BATTLEFIELD
Clear the battlefield and let me see
All the profit from our victory.
You talk of freedom, starving children fall.
Are you deaf when you hear the season's call?
Were you there to watch the earth be scorched?
Did you stand beside the spectral torch?
Know the leaves of sorrow turned their face,
Scattered on the ashes of disgrace.
Every blade is sharp; the arrows fly
We're the victims of your armies lie,
Where the blades of grass and arrows rain
Then there will be no sorrow,
Be no pain
fall far and well Pilots!

I love it! In '74 I started an intramural soccer team at University of New Mexico with a bunch of crazies out of the dorms. We went 0-11 but we had a lot of fun. I silk screened Tarkus on our t-shirts and this song was our battle cry! We were called the Hokona (name of the dorm, means virgin butterfly in Zuni) Armadillos.

I'm putting up Darkness again, by Van Der Graaf Generator, because I've always been amazed by Pete Hamill's voice [who I saw with his own small band in '78] and David Jackson. This is one of the best YouTube comments-
Amazing musicianship, particularly David Jackson - anyone who can simultaneously play different melodies on two saxophones has my vote!

Octopus Medley by Gentle Giant-early '70s , adventurous keyboarding, death by recorders! Rock out! They really do have a lot of fun! Can't consider yourself a real fantasy fan until you hear them.:D
