Sigs and Avatar Creep

Post by Vain »

OK. I know we have a fairly rough guideline around avatar size, sig lengths and content etc - and it's based primarily on common sense / consideration for others - but I've noticed that some are like the universe...continually expanding so I'm going to make the guidelines a tad more defined

Have a look at your profile and make the necessary changes - that way I get to be lazy and I don't have to contact everybody to fix it /edit it for you 8)

I'm also going to prevent linking avatars to remote sites. You can upload your avatar and still use it so it shouldn't be an issue.

The avatar sizes will be limited by the board's setup and I think they're quite generous enough so won't be expanding the parameters.

Avatar limitations are 150x200 pixels and 50KB size

For sig length and content rules of thumb, consider the following:

- images in sigs are not frowned on but limit it to ONE image no larger than the maximum avatar file size
- if you have an image in your sig then limit your text to no more than 5 lines in normal font size
- if you don't have an image in your sig then limit your text to no more than 10 lines in normal font size

I think that covers it. I will disable remote avatar linking by the weekend - I'll do it Saturday night my time so I have no clue what that means in everybody else's time :)

Still cool for the sig to be in quote format?

Vain...

My current avatar has these settings:

Size: 56.5 KB (57,901 bytes)
Pixels: 130 x 100

I'll have to change it for 6.5 KB?

...and crap, I thought I had deleted my dragons when I added the new line of text...

Yep - I'm more thinking along the lines of vertical height than how the text is formatted...if that makes sense :)

As for avatar size, I need to set some limit so if 50kb doesn't suit, I'm willing to adjust it slightly but not endlessly :)

Ha !! 150x200 and under 24kb :P

Menolly: Will wait and see if we have hordes of people that need av sizes greater than 50kb and we have until the weekend anyway so no need to change anything now :)

Crap, I think my avatar is linked off-site. I'll PM Edge to see if he can send me the original file.

dlb, will right clicking and doing "save picture as" work to download it on to your computer?

200 H x 150 W would be much better for avatars.

Yes, but it's too large to upload. Vain, I've removed it for now. And no, Menolly, you can't have it. ;)

No need to rush into things and changes things right now. Rather let me know what your needs are and I'll absolutely contemplate them. I'm ultimately just trying to set a standard that works for most and the initial post is more like a starter for ten :)

Yeah
I think a lot of the Edgetars are larger than 50 KB, which is why almost all of us have them on a remote site.

Why are you banning offsite linking? A lot of Edgetars are linked to Edge's site. And I bet a lot of them will be a problem to upload here, in terms of size.

Edit: Or what Menolly said.

Hmm... I have a teensy weensy avatar... can I sell my pixel credits on the open market for WGDs?

.... but my plan to convert my sig text to an image in order to control the formatting has been shot through the knees.

Vain: if my sig is *solely* one off-site image, and it's smaller than 5 lines of text... is there any way to make it work?

I ask because you're ruling out all of the ways of putting my Watchie Award somewhere. And I can't be the sole person with the problem, especially since the '07s will be announced soon.

Don't get me wrong: no one complains about huge avatars more than me. I'm like an old man sending back soup, I swear!

My avatar is only 24 kb, but it's 115W x 200H, so it's too big to upload to the site. Image

It should be fine, Ms. Mary.

Vain said 150 x 200
Yours is 115 x 200

How is that too big?

It is not fine. It will not upload because it is too many pixels. So the site tells me. It may have something to do with it being an animated .gif Image
