I can't see what you posted, but what little I've seen of Hell's Kitchen has always terrified me.

...can I promote The Galley here...?

Cat-like reflexes there. He should've turned it into a submission hold.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Chef Ramsay annoys me. But then, Hell's Kitchen annoys me in general. I just don't see the point of watching a show where people throw fits over how to prepare and present food. Or have I missed the point of this program?

(Yes, I realize I won't be receiving any invitations for dinner from culinary connoisseurs here.) :P

I hate Hell's Kitchen, MM. I avoid it with a passion.

Napoleon used to eat all three courses at the same time. So, he'd have a bit of pork, then he'd have a bite of cake etc. His more aristocratic generals found it amusing so he retorted: "It's just food". I'm with Bony. Never understood food snobbery. That said, having seen one episode of Ramsey's show, I must say the guy is certainly entertaining. And his reflexes were very impressive in that clip.

I never watch the Hell's Kitchen, but I've watched Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares on the BBC. On that show he basically snatches up the owner of a failing restaurant by the scruff of the neck and shakes him until he sees the light. From the three or so episodes I saw, I'd say that Ramsay enjoys conflict, but often does see what needs to be done. I think Ramsay plays up the drama for the camera by pushing a person far past his limits, but then again maybe that is what the person needs. *shrugs*

Yeah, that was the show I saw. And the restaurant did seem like an insult to humanity before he re-worked it.

I've seen an episode of Kitchen Nightmares, and I do agree that in a situation like a failing restaurant, a very firm hand like Ramsay's is what is needed to put things back on track - because the restaurant owner is operating in denial.

However, I have no particular interest in the vagaries of the restaurant business, so that could be why that show has limited appeal for me. Well, that and the whole confrontational thing. :P

But that doesn't mean I don't like shows about food or cooking. I liked The Frugal Gourmet, for instance. Easy-going guy. See, I watch a cooking show to relax, not to get stressed. Seeing Ramsay hurl abuse at cooks on his shows, and seeing said cooks totally lose it, is not my idea of a stress reliever.

What's weird is how he says that's the way you run a restaurant. But I've been in lots of them and I have yet to hear the head chef explode at staff. I don't deny that head chefs do it from time to time, but I really think that Ramsay is unique.

Me too! I don't like to watch any confrontational show. I drove my last roommate batty because I couldn't stand to watch those courtroom shows (Judge Judy and the like). It's too much confrontation for me. *shudders*

My wife and I watch both Hell's Kitchen and Kitchen Nightmares. I can't explain it but I find Ramsay very entertaining. My wife laughs at me when we're watching the show and the Chef is going off, I'm sitting there on the couch with a big grin on my face or laughing out loud.
After watching Ramsay's shows whenever we're at a restaurant we say something to each other like. "Are the crab cakes fresh?" And then giggle like children. :-)

I meant in a kitchen, or normal place of work. Now in a prison, it may be just the thing. ;)
