Very cool. I'll have to beg Santa (wife) to get it for me. Or I'll just run down to Best Buy on my lunch break. Either way. :-)

Jedi Academy? I thought this thread was supposed to bo about TC's ethnic origins. BTW, does anybody know what Lord Foul's ethnic origins are? It's safe to assume he wasn't born in the Land, but where was he born? My vote is Middle Earth :screwy:

Lord foul was not born, he is like the creator, he just is and has always been...(this is of course only relevant if I am correct)

...Maybe we'll find out in the third chrons...

Sorry, I cannot bring myself to believe that Foul is not a created being.
Now, let us go back to the question of his ethnic origins. I have done a little research on his hideout, Foul's Creche, that has brought up some interesting facts.

Main Entry: crèche
Pronunciation: 'kresh, 'krAsh
Function: noun
Etymology: French, from Old French creche manger, crib, of Germanic origin; akin to Old High German krippa manger

Now, it doesn't surprise me in the least to find that Foul is likely French. Also, we know that the term "Crib" is often used by people of African descent (at least here in the US) to descibe their home, so it may be that Foul is a Frenchman of African descent, with possible family ties to Hitler. :screwy:

How come no one thinks TC is French or Italian? :-)

Because he doesn't drink, is not Catholic, is rude but not quite that rude, and Foul, who is TC's mortal enemy, is French. :screwy:

I'm sorry but that is still rather vague. Its analogous to referring to a certain dog as a "mutt". Outside of Native Americans, Americans to the last man woman and child's ancestry all came from some other country. These "original" ethnicities are the target of my question. My feeling is that TC's parentage is English given is speech patterns. IMHO of course. :-)

Thomas Covenant lived in America, but could have been of any descent. I prefer to think if him as being of European descent, but I think his swear-words are misleading.

If you take them at bloody face value, he does sound of English descent, but I contend that this was merely SRD's attempt to make TC foul-mouthed without actually using foul language. You might be thinking, well, excrement of a pig! Why would he do something like that?

A) To remove one potential barrier to getting printed at the time he was writing, by not using 'flagged' words.
B) To use interesting wording that SRD invests with meaning to the reader, rather than relying on words that are so overused (f**k, s**t,) that they lose their impact.

Personal Sidebar [My mother is one of the calmest and nicest people on the planet, and when she swears, its like the Seventh Seal has just opened---because she so rarely swears, when she does you know she MEANS it.]

SRD switch-hits, though, doesn't he? As I recall, I think "Sheepf**ker" was one of Nick Succorso's occasional pet-names for Angus Thermopyle. But the setting of the Gap Cycle was so gritty/nasty that anything less would have seemed...silly. "Sheepravisher?" I think this was done intentionally to fit the hardened sci-fi tone, just as the fantasy realms (The Land and Orison) had softer language to fit their more lyrical tones.

So, Bloody Hell and Damnation! I don't think his curse-habits should have a bearing on placing TC ethnically.

To answer the original question: I think TC is Swedish. Try reading his lines as if he were the Swedish Chef from the muppet show. "I'm not yer bloody Berek. Bork! Bork! Bork!" :screwy:

Sheepravisher?!! Oh, that's great. I'm using it.
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

You mean SRD originally wanted TC to use words like "Groveler"? :screwy:
