How do you feel today?

My partner has a cold. What is it with men: they get a cold and it's almost like they're ready to take the last rights?!?!?!
Anyway....
We've ended up with some resident kookaburras which is kinda cool. At dawn and dusk they do their territorial laughing which I love.

Mad.
After eight years of working for the same company, they're gonna 'downsize' me out of a job next month.
That leaves me with four options:
I could stay employed with the company by accepting a demotion. This has zero appeal, as I am too old and insubordinate, and would resent every second of it.
I could attempt to make a lateral transfer to another location. This would probably be in my best interest, though at the moment I am pretty furious at the company in general. And also, have been around long enough to recognize that this is only the first wave of Bad Things To Come, in which case, it would be better to get out now.
I could ask my ex-boss for a job. She offered me a spot two months ago and I turned it down because I didn't want the extra commute. (Isn't hindsight great?) I still don't want the commute, which would be an extra 90 minutes per day for a total of almost four hours.
I could use this as an opportunity to get out of retail, which I have been wanting to do for eight years. Problem is, I don't know what I want to do, and don't have a lot of time to decide.
I'm just thinking out loud here, but if anyone has any brilliant (or even not-so-brilliant) advice I'd love to hear it.

He went to the doctor. The doctor said "you have a bit of a chest infection and a cold".

But, well: he at least killed two birds with one stone. He said to the doctor "I have a snoring problem" (my oath he does!). And the doctor suggested he lost some weight. Um...what have I been saying for the last year!!!

Oh and Sorus, hope it works out for you!!!

Sorus, you have my complete sympathy. I am not impressed in the slightest by the kind of thinking that puts the proverbial bottom line ahead of people. I think being demoted would be just as demoralizing as being laid off. "Downsizing" is just another asinine business euphemism.
It sucks that you don't have much time to decide what to do, but I hope you do find something you really like.

That sucks Sorus. I'm in a similar boat. I've only been in retail for two years, but I'm already tired of it.
I find myself having the same feelings I had back in high school. The world is too damn big, and everything is too 'effing complex. Community College just looks like High School, and the last thing I want is to go back to THAT group of idiots and stress.
On the other hand, retail is sucking my soul dry, the hours suck, and I dread having to go through an interview for another job. If I hate anything more than interviews in my life, I've yet to find it.
All in all, I'm sure it's a simple problem to solve, I'm just having trouble forcing myself to man-up and face it.
I guess I'll try to get a good night's sleep tonight (long day at work) and then write it all down tomorrow, and see where I stand. Actually, even as I write this, I'm starting to feel better, just forcing myself to LOOK at the damn situation, and stop ignoring it.
Anyway. Off to sleep. What a long ass weekend.

Today I am feeling achey all over. My hip is playing up and I need a day off. Roll on Easter break!

Early to bed early to rise. I was in bed before 9 last night and now I'm up before 5.
My knees are still aching a little from all the walking around I did on Saturday. I really need to get some better walking shoes because I need the exercise. I guess new shoes are on the to do list for today.

Sorus, I know from experience that resentment is a bad thing to carry around, because it is a subtle poison. How terrible would that commute be, if you enjoyed working for that former boss when you got there? Would it be better than the short(er?) commute you have now to a job that if you accepted the demotion would *always* stick in your craw?Sorus wrote:Mad.After eight years of working for the same company, they're gonna 'downsize' me out of a job next month.

For the current job - in your opinion, are they getting rid of excess people, and will soon upswing again, or is this a sign of something more serious? Does the company think they can shrink themselves to sales success? That usually doesn't work... once they have shrunk, will they have enough peope to get the work done, or are they getting rid of too many?
I don't know your situation other than what you have mentioned, but based on the questions I have asked above, it may be time to move on, regardless of the job that is there for you, if the conditions are dire enough...
At least talk to that former manager that works across town...
And of course, these are just casual suggestions - individual results may vary.

I just received the following from my kid sister. With our family history, it merits cause for concern. Good thoughts appreciated.

My atypical hyperplasia biopsy was in a cyst. I talked with a gynie friend over the weekend; she said from the reaction it's safe to assume we're looking at a complex cyst. Simple cysts by default are benign. Complex cyst in itself doesn't mean anything, it's a multistep process of further evaluation.
My surgeon appointment is 3/12. I expect an aspiration. 1 week wait for lab results. Further decision from there.

Balon, anywhere you go for college, you'll face similar immaturity and drama to what you did in high school. However, going to a community college pretty much guarantees that you will know people in college, with whom you went to high school. Often, because of this, drama from high school will follow you to college.Balon wrote:That sucks Sorus. I'm in a similar boat. I've only been in retail for two years, but I'm already tired of it.

If possible, transferring to a different, possibly smaller school could help you get away from high school drama at the least. (sure, you'll pick up college drama along the way, but at least it won't be high school coming back to haunt you. If you're really starting to hate college because of this, you might want to look into transferring.
Now thats a good point because I was thinking of attending a community college on the oher side of the state for their Librarians program or their ASL program.magickmaker17 wrote: Balon, anywhere you go for college, you'll face similar immaturity and drama to what you did in high school. Not ALL men turn into babies when they get sick.
Some of them (us) are the exact opposite, and will admit to no one, including family, doctors, or themselves that there is ANYthing the matter with them, and we figure that whatever it is, we can fix it ourselves.
I've worked with the flu a few times, once with a fever around 103. Also with a bad stomach flu once...actually, that day, I ended up going home.
last year I treated an abcess tooth with a plastic toothpick and some dental floss...and a few advil.
Right now, I think I probebly have a hernia; and I'm trying to figure out how to avoid telling the wife, work or my doctor.
