Gary Gygax, creator of Dungeons and Dragons, has passed away

Post by Waddley »

There isn't any official article on it yet (that I've found), but there is this: forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=999549

He was 69.

I'm very sad. I've been playing D&D since I was 10.

Apparently he didn't make his saving throw.....

I'm sorry, I just couldn't help it.

I really enjoyed D&D back in the day.

No, I thought of that too, Cail. And then I followed up the thought with "He'll just come back with -1 CON."

He'd want me to have those thoughts, I think.

But I really am sad :(

Oh well, we could always reincarnate him... maybe he'll come back as a badger.

But seriously, sad days seeing Gary go. I will have to do something when my group plays this Friday.

Actually I read that he had a terminal illness about a week ago. From what I have heard of Gary, I am sure he would think your comments were pretty funny. (Anyone else see the episode of Futurama he was in?)

Rest in peace. Let's hope an evil necromancer doesn't decide to bring you back as a zombie.

Too bad he passed. I played this through most of college. When I went off to the navy my other role playing buds created a computer game from their DnD experience. Then they made their own company are now millionairs.

I spent many, many years playing D&D.

RIP, Gary.

I never played paper-and-pencil D&D, but I have played Baldur's Gate II, Planescape: Torment, and other games that used the D&D ruleset. I bet he never imagined how much culture and media would spring up from his original creation. Truly a sad day.

I first played the original D&D basic set (the old red box set) in 6th grade - ~1984. I have been casting spells and making To Hit rolls ever since.

I feel so out of the loop.
The only thing of D&D I know is the reference in E.T., and even that flies over my head.

But, if D&D brought about the likes of Pantheon, then definitely, a sad day has come.

bizarre!!!

only a few days ago Ger asked me how D&D "got started!" "Who invented D&D?" he asked.

so i googled and discovered Gary.

That's a shame, I lost many a weekend playing AD&D when I was younger.

RIP.

Truly sad. I still play (and am a self described dork at 30 ;) ), and one of my first campaigns gave birth to an entire world, which I am currently making into an underground comic. Without Gary's influence on my dad (who played throughout his naval career), I would never have become interested in fantasy, or even read the Chronicles! (gasp) Thank you Gary, for teaching me to love all things magical.

I think he deserves a re-roll and +3 save vs death magic.
