Hmm. I remember reading "The Lightstone". Not sure I read the rest of the books -- maybe I got "The Lightstone" off a remainder rack and didn't ever find the others.

I agree that the Ea Cycle (what I read of it, anyhow) wasn't nearly as cool as the Neverness books.

To me Zindell is a fantastic Sci-Fi author and a so-so fantasy author-if it wasn't for some great characters like Kane, Atara and her dad I couldn't have hung with it. Actually if you make it through all 4 books the series, pretty much, becomes much cooler and almost redeems itself.

Wow, I had no idea that dude was from Boulder. Maybe I can actually find a copy of Neverness in a used book store.

Of course, I checked out his website, and his daughters are named Hawk and Canary. Yeah, that's all I really needed to know that he lives in Boulder. I am SO glad that my parents aren't from Boulder. Canary? Seriously, could you imagine going through life being named Canary? Do you have to wear yellow all the time? It would be so brutal to meet a chick named Canary. What if she's hot, and you want to hit on her, and she tells you her name is Canary? You're pretty much guaranteed to start laughing, which ain't exactly going to land you in her nest. Crap, that's one hell of a name.

Wow that's brand new, thanks Farm Ur!! Maybe that's why he's divorced and with a new girlfriend. Maybe Mom bought the rubber house!

I once made a play for a girl who told me her name was Tabby and I laughed and said "what, like a cat?"
Not like a cat, it was short for Tabitha. Oh well.

I've started properly on The Broken God now, after a break of a year or so. It got quite slow for a while when Danlo first goes to Neverness, but it's picked up again and it's nice to have the Pilot's college fleshed out some more.

One continuing theme from Neverness that I've noticed is that the author tends to lapse into a misty-eyed reverie whenever he has the opportunity to write about penises. What is that all about?
Q. Why do Communists drink herbal tea?
A. Because proper tea is theft.

Not sure, but I thought the Alaloi scarring thing sounds too cool. I want mine to be sparkly too.

I sent an email to David Zindell a couple of days ago. I just got back a response. What a nice and gracious man! :D 8)

I'm currently in a bind Zindell-wise.

For like the fourth time in as many years, I said to myself, gee, I swear I bought the Neverness book that comes after Broken God. So I search my shelf, find War in Heaven, and ask myself why I never read it. I start to read, and five pages in realize that I missed a book. So I put it back on the shelf.

I tried to end the cycle this week. I looked on the net, and discovered that yes, there is a book, The Wild, that I missed.

Amazon has it in paperback. For $29.00.

B&N: if I'm a member, I can get it for $27.50.

Paperback?!?! Yikes!

I check out e-bay. They have every Zindell book ... except The Wild.

What gives with this book? Is it a rarity?

I dunno. I checked it out at the Chesapeake (VA) public library. Try doing an inter-library loan?
"It is not the literal past that rules us, save, possibly, in a biological sense. It is images of the past. Each new historical era mirrors itself in the picture and active mythology of its past or of a past borrowed from other cultures. It tests its sense of identity, of regress or new achievement against that past.”

Thanks, FnF, but over $20 (with shipping) for a used paperback seems a little steep.

My question isn't really about how to get a copy. My question is really, what is it about this book that it's $20 used and $30 new, for a paperback?!?!?!

As far as the used at Amazon go, Neverness has some extremely cheap copies, some even less than a dollar. But The Broken God and War in Heaven are also expensive. Who can say why? I remember when flea markets and used book stores sold inexpensive stuff. But these days, everybody's looking to become millionaires with their old junk. I think it has something to do with those tv shows. Not every LP is a collector's item, eh?

Hey, I'll have you know I love the Antiques Road Show!

Wait, why am I here? Oh yeah...for whatever reason, the books are still nowhere to be found locally. Not that I've made any special effort to look for them, I've just Never seen Neverness around when browsing for other titles at bookstores. Heh.

Okay. That's a wee bit of a turn off.

While I agree, in general, there's one scene that is hilarious.

uh...danlo...

The Rose Womb Cloisters is visible to me when I'm not logged in. I don't think phase 3 is quite ready for launch if that's the case.

It's visible to everyone on the main index; but you can't see anything inside it.
