Never was a big fan of the Pixies, but all my friends were, so take of that what you will. I love the Loud Family, who sadly are no longer together, but I'd recommend to all. It is something of a branch off from Game Theory, which might ring a bell or two with some in the know, but not too many knew of Loud Family, sadly.
I just checked
their website, and I stand corrected. Looks like Scott Miller, who is the genius of it all, is talking about making music again. So maybe his retirement might be over. He used to answer questions all the time, and I had a few answered by him back when that was virtually unheard of. And looks like he is back to doing it again (the Ask Scott section). His responses often wowed me at his intellect, so...yeah...anyway. Oh good. Maybe I can get all excited about them again.
Eels, always good. Try "Daises of the Galaxy" in particular.
Tom Waits is also a favorite of mine, but I wouldn't put him in "guitar god" category. But he's one of the best lyricists.
For more country-influenced rock, and fantastic lyrics, there is the Rainmakers, who the heart and soul of the band is Bob Walkenhorst.
Here's where to find them. Absolutely hits me where I live.
