After taking the time to change his underwear, Captain Blake returned to the bridge. As he assumed his position at the command station he noticed each of his officers taking the time to look back at him and then chuckling quietly, apparently sharing in the pleasure of a well executed prank at the Captain’s expense. Yeah. Laugh it up. You won’t be laughing in hell. That I can guarantee.
Suddenly an alarm sounded. Indicators at every control station began to light up, sending the crew scurrying to positions all around the room.
“Damn it! What is that? Is it the Guild?” Blake shouted. “Stand by to shut it down!” This is it. I finally screwed up big and everyone will know. They’ll mutiny. Hell I’d mutiny. Can I mutiny if I’m the Captain? Hell it’s worth a try. I wonder how long I can last in an escape shuttle. I’d have to kill everyone before I leave though. Don’t want them coming after me trying to take my stuff.
“Wait, Captain.” S’raat interjected. “The sensors have picked up objects dead ahead but they haven’t detected any Guild signals. We may be drifting into an asteroid field, one moment for clarification.” S’raat returned his attention to the readouts while Captain Blake clutched the arms of his chair in near frantic anticipation.
“Well, S’raat? What is it? I gotta make a decision here.” Blake forced himself to remain seated but his heart’s desire was to do otherwise. I’m just going to run out of here. Down the hall into the elevator. They won’t be able to catch me unless I fall down on the way. Yeah. That would be about right. Running for my life and then just tripping and falling down like a worthless punk. Like a little crippled girl that has to use crutches because she can’t walk worth a shit, that’s me. They should all start calling me Little Crippled Girl. I deserve it. Son of a bitch I’m pathetic.
“Captain. The objects are ships. Dozens of ships but they’re all disabled. No signs of life. No power readings. It looks like we’ve run into a graveyard. Something big happened here. We missed it.” S’raat fell silent, staring at Blake, wondering what to do next.
